Can the Nintendo Switch 2’s Incredible Dual Screen Really Do This?

A second screen for the Nintendo Switch 2? It’s official, well, kind of. Nintendo’s patent for a second screen for the Switch 2 has just been discovered, and fans of the Big N are ripe with speculation and anticipation. The Nintendo DS and 3DS are two of my favorite consoles of all time, and this news definitely has me excited.

This patent originally surfaced in 2023, and many fans wondered if the Switch 2 would adopt this setup, aptly timed with its name. However, lest we forget, patents are filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) all the time but never actually materialize.

What makes this second screen notion even more interesting is how the technical illustration shows that the second screen can be folded or attached on the backside, facing the opposite. This would make the system a double-sided monitor in that regard. Also, it has been confirmed that the Switch 2’s magnetic Joy Cons can be attached backwards

There also appears to be double the number of available buttons now, which begs the question, what if, instead of a second screen, you could just attach two Nintendo Switch 2 consoles together?  Or, even more ridiculously, what if you could attach more than two screens (or consoles) together from both the top and bottom? Wow. Just wow.

The Nintendo Switch 2 in the Real World

From the viewpoint of the video game market, having a dual screen will once again help the Nintendo Switch 2 stand out from its competition. With the success of portable gaming, largely in part to the resurgence of the first Nintendo Switch, more competitors are trying to enter the market. Take the Steam Deck, for example, developed by Valve Corporation, the same company behind Steam, Half-Life, and Portal. Currently, the Steam Deck could be offered cheaper, has a larger library of games, and might be a bit more powerful than the Switch 2 in handheld mode.

I, for one, support the idea of a second screen oriented directly on top of the main screen of the Nintendo Switch 2, and I’d be open to using it in other ways too, as long as it can still serve primarily as a second screen. This feature would also allow Nintendo to release their entire 2DS and 3DS library of games on the Nintendo Switch 2 in a way that they can be played nearly true to their original release counterparts.

Let’s not forget what made the DS and 3DS so revolutionary in the first place: that second screen changed how we played games. From inventory management and maps to touch-based puzzles and unique camera angles, the dual-screen format brought depth and creativity to handheld gaming.

If Nintendo manages to recapture even a fraction of that magic with the Switch 2, we could be looking at a true evolution of their hybrid console concept. Plus, indie developers could have a field day inventing entirely new experiences. Of course, there’s still a lot we don’t know. Will it be detachable? Will it work in docked mode? Is it optional?

These are the questions swirling around right now—but if history is anything to go by, Nintendo doesn’t play it safe. They innovate. And if the second screen becomes a real, functioning part of the Switch 2, it could very well reshape the future of handheld gaming yet again. For fans like me, it’s hard not to get excited about the possibilities.

One thing’s for sure, if you have a Nintendo Switch 2 console, you’ll need to pay attention to it overheating, as a special warning has been issued by Nintendo themselves.

Another important issues for those who have or an interested in owning a Nintendo Switch 2 is understanding possible difficulties with buying and playing used games.
