What has become increasingly apparent since Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took the world by storm following its release on 24th April 2025, is that it’s a passion project spurred on by people who are truly reveling in what they do. Interviews with developers and writers always highlight how lucky they were to be included on the project, the creative freedom they’ve been allowed to pull together this masterpiece, and how fun the project has been to work on.
Nothing promotes this sense of fun more than the news that these lucky devs spent their precious off-time engineering a way to have a one-on-one mock battle between Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Renoir and Verso, just to settle the argument of who would win. Using a Tekken 8 mod that allowed them to use Tekken’s Victor and Clive as models for Renoir and Verso, the devs were able to duke it out in the fun-filled match, though who the winner was remains a secret.
The mod used to facilitate this legendary Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 battle was made via Tekkenmods by user PaRaDin, and what the mod essentially does is replace the cosmetics of Victor and Clive’s character models with certain aspects of the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 characters to face off in the showdown. The character of Victor was used to model Renoir, with the added benefit of the character already being French, and Clive was used for Verso. Ironically, both Clive and Verso are voiced by Ben Starr. It’s these little Easter egg connections that give a little sense of thrill to the altercation, making it feel just that little bit more authentic.
The end models did look compelling, though the mannerisms present for Victor and Clive were left untouched, so to see Renoir folding his arms with the sort of arrogant gangster air over a large glowing gun was pretty funny. Though the hair colour could be changed, the clothing could not, so Verso, being decked out in dark purple finery, was also a highlight.
You have to admire the devs’ dedication to their project, and indeed, that’s exactly what Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada did when he commented on the fight, and specifically Victor Deleard’s choice of controller, over on X, saying: ‘Is that a leverless controller? You’re a serious fighting game player!’ After a comment like that from a fighting game producer, of all things, you really do start to get curious about the outcome of the match. A fight between Renoir and Verso would have been an emotional rollercoaster within the canon of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, considering the characters’ complicated connections and just imagining the dialogue gets the fans drooling.
Perhaps, following this mock-up fight, we might see the devs sink further into this little rabbit hole and produce a little spin-off scenario or two pitting cetain people against one another where they can battle it out with words as much as they can battle it out with the usual glorious finesse of the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 turn-based battle system. Then the debate would be settled for the fans as much as it would for the devs.
So with all that covered, the only question that remains to be considered is who would win in a one-on-one between these two characters? It’s interesting to consider Victor’s closer quarters brawling type style pitted up against Clive’s sword-based dexterity in much the same way that it’s interesting to consider Renoir’s skillset in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 if pushed against Verso’s.
In the battle that goes down outside of the mansion in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Renoir showcases a mix of close-quarters skills and a mastery of magic akin to Final Fantasy’s terrifying Demi. He does carry that heavy-hitter air that contrasts Verso’s more liquid-like movements, and considering it took Verso, Maelle, and Lune to take him down outside the mansion, perhaps it would be safe to say that Renoir would take the cake.
Who do you think would win, and what dialogue gems do you think would pass between these characters in that highly regarded one-on-one situation?
