Teamfight Tactics Set 15: Role Revamp is Helpful for Champion Design

The Teamfight Tactics Developer team is always looking to improve the functionality of their game. Heading into Set 15, the systems are more or less figured out. One issue the team ran into was how to create frontline bruisers that were easier to balance. If you think of Rengar from Set 14, he was either wildly overpowered or so weak he was unplayable. With the new role system, the team should have an easier time creating new champions.

Teamfight Tactics Roles Revamped

Roles have been in existence in Teamfight Tactics for some time. The recommended items for each champion are based on the role it is assigned. With Set 15, the role impact is being expanded. Each role receives a bonus that will only apply to that role. Below are all the roles in Set 15:

  • Tank
    • Tanks gain five Mana per attack
    • Gain Mana from taking damage
    • More likely to be targeted
  • Fighter
    • Fighters gain ten Mana per attack
    • Gain 10% Omnivamp
  • Caster
    • Casters gain seven Mana per attack
    • Generate two Mana per second
  • Assasin
    • Assassins gain 10 Mana per attack
    • Less likely to be targeted
  • Marksman
    • Marksmen gain 10 Mana per attack
  • Specialist
    • Specialists generate resources in a unique way

Why These Roles Matter

The role that gets affected the most by this change is the fighters. Fighter units would become drain tanks, allowing them to cast more often, purely through taking damage. It created a loop where they would either be unkillable or useless. With this change, the design team has more freedom when it comes to designing fighter units. Lower-star melee champions will become more effective in this way.

Positioning with Tanks will also become more skilled, as you can guarantee they get targeted over your Assassin and Fighter champions.

Item Impact

With the update to the role system, a couple of items have been changed to increase their potency. Two of these items are Adaptive Helm and Giant Slayer. Adaptive Helm grants Tanks and Fighters 35 Armor and MR, while giving the other roles 15 AD and AP. Giant Slayer will now gain its Damage Amp against Tanks instead of the health threshold. More changes to items like this may come in future patches.
