First-person survival horror game Total Chaos recently released a new official gameplay trailer. From developer Trigger Happy Interactive and publisher Apogee Entertainment, it promises atmospheric gameplay and disturbing visuals. Those looking forward to the game’s release won’t have to wait much longer as the debut date is set for July 24. Total Chaos will find itself available on Steam and SteamVR, and as of now, a free playable demo is available on Steam.
The stage of Total Chaos is set at Fort Oasis, a dreary, abandoned mining outpost with an unsettling vibe from the get-go. Players assume the role of an unnamed Coast Guardsman who has washed up on the shore and can’t seem to shake a mysterious voice tempting him to enter the mines through his walkie-talkie. Over the course of 9 core chapters (and a 10th additional DLC), the story unfolds as the protagonist is forced to fight for survival as he desperately searches for answers.
Total Chaos uses psychological horror elements to unnerve players and make them question the presented reality. Featuring a muted color scheme and ravaged environments, it’s hard not to feel uneasy just looking at the newest trailer. With his memory shattered, the protagonist must traverse the mines, prisons, graveyards, and more of Fort Oasis in search of both the island’s secrets and himself. This task, however, is not to be done without monstrous enemies attempting to stand in his way.
Total Chaos features a deeply immersive atmosphere enhanced by its creepy sound design and dynamic lighting. The obscured identity of the game’s protagonist gives the player something more to scavenge for as they navigate environments rife with disturbing monsters and are forced to craft improvised weapons for survival. Players must manage resources carefully in their inventory and use their makeshift weapons to fight enemies controlled by an adaptive AI system that makes each encounter unique.
In a game where every item matters, players must make quick choices about what’s useful and what’s not. Total Chaos features a range of combat possibilities, including gunplay and engaging melee encounters. It was inspired by classic survival horror games but aims to modernize certain gameplay mechanics. Notably, Total Chaos also features themes of psychosis, mental health struggles, decaying sanity, and self-harm.
Although Total Chaos first began as a total conversion mod for Doom II, the fan-driven project has come leaps and bounds since its inception. It’s since been fully reimagined as a standalone ready to make a name of its own, and players are eagerly awaiting the official release of the game later into the year.
