Aces broadcast featured questionable comment from analyst

While the Las Vegas Aces’ 89-81 victory over the Indiana Fever on Sunday was without controversy, the broadcast of the game was a different story.

The high-stakes game was played at T-Mobile Arena and broadcast live on ESPN, which largely went without incident. That was, however, until the fourth quarter, when color commentator and former WNBA player Rebecca Lobo expressed disagreement with the referees declaring an unsuccessful Indiana challenge on a foul against Fever center Aliyah Boston.

“They disagree with you,” play-by-play announcer Pam Ward said to Lobo, who claimed that Aces forward Jackie Young was not set prior to taking the foul.

“They do, and I disagree with them,” the color commentator responded. “And that’s fine. That’s what makes America great, right Pam Ward?”

After a moment of silence, Lobo quickly backpedaled and said “I should rephrase that,” which drew an immediate agreement from Ward.

By the time Lobo walked back her comments, however, it was too late, as fans already clipped Lobo’s words and put them up on social media.

Lobo’s comments were a thinly-veiled reference to President Donald Trump, who has turned ‘Make America Great Again’ into a rallying cry amongst his supporters. The previous day, Trump confirmed that the United States had bombed three of Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities, directly intervening in the war between Iran and Israel. Needless to say, Lobo’s reference was bound to get some attention with the president front and center in the news cycle.

Lobo added some controversy and a bit of hilarity to what was an entertaining battle between two teams hoping to keep their ambitions in good health.
