Angel Reese Apologizes After Unwarranted Criticism Upsets Chicago Sky Teammates

Angel Reese came into the WNBA after winning a national championship in college and was close to repeating in her last season as an amateur. That generally leads to a continuous desire to keep winning.

When she arrived with the Chicago Sky, the team was not the same one that won the 2021 WNBA championship. Most of the players had left for other opportunities, some even winning titles with their new teams.

Some of them are on competitive teams that have invested in facilities to help their players develop. The Sky, on the other hand, has been one of the most poorly managed organizations in the league.

Reese came in along with fellow draftee Kamilla Cardoso, with the pressure of leading the rebuild. Now, they will end their 2nd regular season in a row without a playoff game to talk about.

In fact, this season could be worse than last time if the Sky does not win the final four games despite having 4 more chances. In an interview with The Chicago Tribune, the 23-year-old did not stop herself from speaking her heart out.

I’m not settling for the same thing we did this year. We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me… It’s going to be very, very important this offseason to make sure we attract the best of the best because we can’t settle for what we have this year.

Angel Reese told The Chicago Tribune

The LSU star basically wants the Sky’s front office to go after the best players in the offseason. By saying so, she is essentially suggesting that the current crop playing alongside her is not good enough.

Angel Reese threatens to leave Sky if front office cannot land stars

The Chicago Tribune article blew up across social media earlier, prompting many to wonder what would happen to Angel Reese and her teammates in the offseason. The forward made it clear she will not stay if the situation does not improve.

I am very vocal about what we need and what I want. I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously, I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me. But while I am here, I’m going to try to stay open-minded about what I have here and maximize that as much as I can.

Angel Reese said

There is no doubt that she wants to win, but throwing her teammates under the bus might not have been the best step forward. The Maryland native went on to criticize the team’s lack of a proper backup point guard.

Despite having Rachel Banham and her former LSU teammate Hailey Van Lith in the lineup, Reese thinks the team requires an experienced guard to back up Courtney Vandersloot.

She is also not sure if the 2-time champion Chicago legend will be any good when she returns next season after recovering from her torn ACL. All of these comments did not sit well with her teammates.

Angel Reese apologizes after teammates demand meeting

These comments in the Chicago Tribune article found their way to the Chicago Sky players. Front Office Sports received news from their sources that players demanded that Angel Reese address her comments in a meeting.

Then they went on to battle the Connecticut Sun at home. After the game, naturally, reporters were going to ask the forward about her frustrations with the franchise, to which she had this to say.

I probably am frustrated at myself right now. The language is taken out of context, and I didn’t intentionally mean to put it on my teammates… I want to apologize to my teammates, which I already have, about the article which was misconstrued about what was said.

Angel Reese replied

The 6′ 3″ star claimed her comments in the article were misconstrued, and that she has apologized to her teammates. However, her body language suggested the situation had become prickly, both for her and her teammates.

Next season, there are rumors of a major roster overhaul. Once the next CBA is decided, Sky and Reese’s fans will be waiting to see how the organization reacts to these comments.
