Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark had a heated moment during Saturday’s game following a hard foul, and one prominent voice believes the tension runs far deeper than basketball.

Clark committed a hard foul on Reese in the third quarter, sending the Chicago Sky forward to the floor. Reese immediately sprang up and confronted Clark face-to-face. Clark didn’t engage, calmly walking away toward the other side of the court. It was later upgraded to a flagrant 1 foul on Clark.

Watching the scene unfold, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III weighed in, accusing Reese of being disingenuous about her feelings about Clark.

“After watching Caitlin Clark’s flagrant foul on Angel Reese and the aftermath, there is no way Angel Reese can continue the lie that she doesn’t dislike Caitlin Clark,” Griffin said. “I know what hatred looks like. Angel Reese HATES Caitlin Clark. Not some basketball rivalry hate either. Hate.”

Both Clark and Reese have rarely spoken publicly about their rivalry. However, Reese shed some light on the dynamic during a Wall Street Journal interview last year.

“Me and Caitlin have been playing against each other since we were kids,” Reese said. “It’s just a full circle moment of how women are viewed when it comes to trash-talking, and it’s okay in men’s sports. So we’re gonna normalize that in women’s sports as well, so it’s just super competitive. I think we’re two great competitors. We brought a lot of fans to this league, and I thought we’re gonna continue to do that, and one day, hopefully, we can be teammates.”

After the game, both Clark and Reese downplayed the foul, calling it a "basketball play."
