Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark’s preparations for her return to basketball are now in full swing. The 23-year-old has fully recovered from a season-ending groin injury that cut her second year in the WNBA short. What makes her long-awaited comeback extra special is the fact that she will be suiting up for Team USA.
Clark will be part of the American contingent competing in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in Puerto Rico. She is set to make her highly anticipated national team debut on Wednesday against Senegal as Team USA prepares for the FIBA World Cup in September this year.
While Clark has firmly established herself as one of, if not the biggest name in the WNBA today, she will be suiting up alongside some of the brightest stars in the league.
Tested veterans such as Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, Kahleah Copper and Jackie Young will lead the charge for Team USA. Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers and Kiki Iriafen are some of the young stars who will also represent the United States.
Clark expressed how much she’s looking forward to her Team USA debut. She also made it clear that she knows she’s not going to be the star player on the squad.
"This is a really cool opportunity,” Clark said, via ESPN. “If you don't feel that way, then you probably don't care enough. Certainly, that's how I feel about it for myself.
“... This is a different stage. You're not going to come out here and be the star player. That's not how it's going to be for USA Basketball."
Clark is well aware of the role she needs to play for Team USA. As she said, there’s not going to be one star player on the squad. This team of stars will need to come together, put their egos aside and unite for a common goal.
Clark and Co. play five games in Puerto Rico between March 11 and 17. Apart from Senegal, they also have matchups scheduled against Puerto Rico, Italy, New Zealand and Spain.
Team USA is one of five teams that have already qualified for the World Cup in Berlin. They secured their berth after winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup tournament.
