The Indiana Fever lost in Atlanta on Tuesday by a 77-58 margin in a game that the Dream blew wide open on their home floor in the third quarter, when they outscored the visitors by a 23-9 mark. That turned a 33-33 halftime tie into a runaway for Atlanta.
It was the Fever's fifth straight game without star guard Caitlin Clark, who injured her quad back on May 24 in a loss to the Liberty. Indiana had won two straight, and moved to 4-4 on the year before the loss to the Dream. Orginally, there was hope that Clark could play on Tuesday--the diagnosis was that she wouljd be re-evaluated after two weeks, which was Saturday--but Clark now needs time to get into game shape.
That could very well happen on Saturday against the Liberty. Having just one game this week allows for plenty of practice time, coach Stephanie White noted.
"She has been doing some on the court workouts, and she got into a little bit of practice, yesterday, in an controlled environment,” White said. “And we’ll continue to build on that. Getting workouts outside of practice is one thing, but getting into game-flow, rhythm, timing, movement patterns, getting up and down the floor, is a very different thing.“
But one of the big questions to be answered when Clark returns is whether the Fever will unleash her full throttle or force White to only play her limited minutes. That's a tough situation for a coach, but White said she won't be making that call herself.
"I’ll defer to whatever the medical staff suggests," White said.
Clark plays 35.0 minutes per game, which ranks fifth in the WNBA.
The Fever will play the Liberty, who are 9-0, in New York on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET in a nationally televised game.
