The Portland Fire might be a new addition to the WNBA this year. But they are making a clear statement that the team cannot be taken lightly. Earlier, Emily Engstler took on the critics for not giving Portland enough importance. Now, as the franchise notched up its sixth win, things are looking extremely upbeat. Adding to the joy, Megan Gustafson recently became part of an elite company following her stellar basketball display.
The Fire took on the Indiana Fever this Saturday. And while the matchup was tough, Alex Sarama and his team looked confident and believed in their game. Leading the way was Gustafson, who scored 22 points to snatch the game away from Caitlin Clark and co.

Logging in for 28 minutes, Gustafson had an excellent shooting performance, scoring a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. Such a great performance also led Gustafson to become the 15th player in WNBA history to score at least 20 points in a game without missing a shot.
Owing to the 29-year-old star’s surge, Portland Fire was able to hold off Indiana Fever, as they won 100-84. Sitting in sixth position in the table, the team will now look to consolidate and push for a winning run.
Meanwhile, the former Iowa star also has some more records to show for.
The 29-year-old’s form against the Fever did not come as a one-off incident. In fact, she has been showing glimpses of her elite game for a long time now. Just a day before the game against Indiana, Gustafson clinched the 800th point of her WNBA career. And that was not all.
The 22-points scored against the Fever ranks second in terms of the Fire star’s best performance in a professional game. Back in 2024, she dropped her career-best figures of 24 points donning the Las Vegas Aces jersey. Playing some sublime basketball this season, the former Iowa star is averaging a career-high 10.4 points at the moment.
Thus, with the 29-year-old leading the charge, things are looking rosy for the Portland Fire. Additionally, as head coach Alex Sarama keeps a positive approach, fans will be eager to see how things pan out next.
