Sun’s Brittney Griner caught recreating Sophie Cunningham’s viral meme

The Connecticut Sun had no answer for the Indiana Fever on Wednesday, suffering a 35-point loss, 123-88, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Sun, who only led once in the lopsided affair, dropped to 7-20. The Fever, meanwhile, improved to 17-10 to grab the solo lead in the Eastern Conference.

Connecticut was outrebounded, 35-28, and gave up 24 points off 15 turnovers. The Sun trailed by 24 points at halftime, 70-46. From there, it was mere formality.

While it would be imprudent for the Sun to point fingers after their embarrassing defeat, Brittney Griner had no problem doing it—literally. She recreated Sophie Cunningham’s viral gesture, which has grown into a popular meme, during their conversation before the game.

Fans were all for the light-hearted moment between Griner and Cunningham, who were former teammates on the Phoenix Mercury.

“I love these two and their friendship,” said @Morgan19Emma.

“Sophie and Brittney were roommates at one point in Phoenix. They’re friends,” echoed @divalious6.

“When will people get that most of these players really like each other and stop with the parasocial narratives?” asked @regstacks.

“This ’bout to have people heated,” added @TheFirstDemon_.

“Not a friendship that was on my BINGO card,” wrote @PositiveEVBet.

Griner sat out the game due to a knee injury. Cunningham, meanwhile, had eight points, three rebounds, and two assists in 21 minutes off the bench.

Cunningham recently weighed in on her viral move, which she made during a heated spat with DeWanna Bonner against the Mercury last month, as kids have also been copying it.
