Athletes may be somewhat of a superhuman, but we all need to be reminded that they are just as human as the next person. Behind the baller, that is Brittney Griner, is a mother and a loving one.
In a heartfelt Instagram post filled with love and emojis, Griner wrote,
“1⃣ whole year of Bash
… I love you son
… Know I’m 10 toes down behind you, always! The world is yours my young King
.”

Bash is Brittney Griner’s son with her wife, Cherelle. As any parent who wants what’s best for their child, the couple have done what they could to keep their private lives private. As fierce as her playing career with the Mercury, she fiercely does what’s needed for her family. Her brand of family love.
Much love from fellow athletes and fans followed as they sent well wishes and greetings to the Phoenix Mercury Center’s young king. Some couldn’t help but reflect on Brittney Griner’s journey from being detained in Russia, to her ongoing WNBA career and now a devoted mom and athlete. The strength to keep walking down the path for the ones you love knows no bounds.
For all her accomplishments in basketball, nothing seems to mean more to Griner right now than her role as a mother. And as Bash turns one, Griner’s message is simple yet powerful. This is just the beginning for her “young King.”
Brittney Griner is setting the record straight.
After a tense in-game moment that saw her foul out against Caitlin Clark, Griner was asked about alleged racist comments she may have directed toward the rookie star. Griner quickly shut down any suggestion that she used a slur.
“I remember fouling out, being mad. I really can’t remember what I said, honestly,” Griner admitted, referencing the heat-of-the-moment emotions.
But when pressed about whether she used racist language, her answer was firm:
“Would never say that. Like, there’s no place for that in our league. I wouldn’t say that. I was mad about the call. I know it wasn’t that because I wouldn’t use that type of language.”
The Phoenix Mercury star has long been a vocal advocate for inclusion, respect, and integrity in the game. While the situation sparked conversation among fans and pundits, Griner’s comments show she’s taking accountability for the emotion but not for words she insists were never said.
In a league that’s constantly under the spotlight, Griner knows exactly how heavy her words carry and she’s not letting anything false stick to her name.
