The Indiana Fever, who are still missing the services of cornerstone superstar Caitlin Clark due to a groin injury, lost even more momentum in their chase for a playoff spot in the WNBA after suffering a deflating 85-79 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night. This marked Indiana’s second straight loss, as they now sit just 1.5 games above the Los Angeles Sparks for the eighth and final postseason seed.
Phoenix’s win was largely thanks to MVP contender Alyssa Thomas, who once again delivered an eye-catching performance to help lead the Mercury to their fifth consecutive victory. The three-time All-WNBA forward went off for 23 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, missing out on what would have been her eighth triple-double of the season.
While Thomas did not reach double-digit assists against Indiana, it did not prevent Phoenix from announcing another historic record from the six-time All-Star.
“First player in WNBA history with five 15+ assists games in a season. No player has ever had more than three,” the Mercury posted on X on Wednesday.

In the caption of the post, the Mercury also continued to campaign for Thomas in the race for the WNBA’s Most Valuable Player award, stating, “MVPs do what’s never been done before.”
Based on the WNBA’s recent MVP odds , Thomas is ranked third in the chase for the coveted individual title behind Napheesa Collier and A’ja Wilson.
It is also worth noting that earlier this season, Thomas broke Clark’s WNBA record for the most points generated off her assists in a single season with 759. She passed the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year’s previous mark of 751.
Clark has been limited to just 13 games this season, which has prevented her from making her mark in the league in her sophomore year. However, the fact that it was still her record that was previously broken by a bona fide superstar such as Thomas speaks volumes about how incredible Clark’s rookie campaign was last year.
