AEW should reunite classic team to boost tag division

During the early years of AEW, Tony Khan heavily emphasized the value of tag team wrestling. There were countless tag matches across Dynamite and Rampage. For a while, there were more tag variations than singles matches, or at least, that's how it felt.

As AEW's roster has grown and more top-end talent has joined the company, the tag division has dwindled. Even The Acclaimed — a major driver of merchandise during their hot spell — have been underused to the point where they've gone ice cold.

However, Khan has a curveball up his sleeve. When Adam Copeland originally agreed to join AEW, elder fans began salivating at the notion of a potential Copeland and Christian Cage reunion. The duo had been an elite tag team during their earlier years on WWE.

Speaking on his "Grilling JR" podcast, legendary announcer Jim Ross admitted there's still a chance the duo team up for one last tag run together.

“Yeah, there’s always a chance," Ross said. h/t to Fightful for the transcription. "I would be for it because I know their natural chemistry is amazing. I’ve seen them at their best, and tags at this stage of their career are not a bad idea. If you want to put some spark and some sizzle in your tag team division, that ain’t a bad way to start."

Both Copeland and Cage are experienced talents. They know how to work a crowd and put on high-level matches. The potential success that would result from the two teaming up should be unquestionable. Furthermore, the draw of the former tag team reuniting could bring in some new eyeballs.

Any fan older than 30 years old will likely have fond memories of that duo and would undoubtedly want to watch them play out their final years with the occasional team-up.

Of course, having the two veterans re-ignite the tag division should not diminish their individual storylines. We still need a logical ending to their feud, which has been volatile since Copeland joined the company.

AEW has multiple avenues available to it in the coming months. The established roster has significant versatility. However, if Khan wants to take the company back to its roots, there's no better way to rebuild the tag division than bringing back the "Edge and Christian" pairing, even if just for a small run of matches.
