Charlotte Flair and Tiffany Stratton wound up engaged in a heated rivalry that ended up getting a little too real on the road to their match at WrestleMania. The infamous promo segment that started it all was the one where Stratton took aim at Flair having been through three divorces, a personal jab The Queen has now addressed for the first time.
Flair tore down what is an admittedly already pretty flimsy fourth wall separating the pro wrestling business and its fans this week via an emotional article shared on The Player's Tribune. Among the many topics covered was the legitimate heat and dislike she and Stratton developed for each other during their rivalry this year, sparked by that infamous moment on SmackDown that felt a little too real.
Flair admits that moment, and the feelings it sparked in her, were as real as they appeared on screen, if not more so. "Yeah, it rocked me legit. I’m not too proud to tell you that. I don’t need everyone thinking I’m playing 5-D chess all of the time. My reaction to that line was as genuine as it gets," Flair admitted.
The 14-time Women's Champion noted that in moments like that, when the crowd turns on her for something in her real life, she's not a character anymore, she's a real person. "Charlotte hasn’t been divorced. So I wasn’t expecting it to come up in that promo….. and then all of a sudden I had an entire arena cheering as I got mocked for something that was (and frankly still is) devastating to me."
Flair notes that she managed to move past it, just like she has had to move past all of the personal jabs her rivals have taken at her during various rivalries throughout her career, but that those jabs have hurt her more than any bump she has ever taken. She also doesn't reflect on what came after that infamous Stratton line. Not just the comeback, which was Flair claiming she had fooled around with Stratton's real-life partner, and fellow WWE Superstar, Ludwig Kaiser, but the poorly-received match at WrestleMania that followed.
The downpour from fans on Flair continued during that match as the veteran was accused of making things hard for Stratton on purpose, leaving Stratton battered and bruised come the end of the match. We may have to wait to hear Stratton's side of the story to find out just how difficult Flair made it for her on what was the biggest night of her career to date.
