Shane McMahon has been the subject of rumors from the AEW fan base. The former WWE star, who held multiple roles within the company and was an on-air talent, is a free agent.
McMahon hasn't been involved in wrestling since leaving WWE. However, a photograph taken during a meeting with Tony Khan earlier this year has ensured his rumored addition to AEW continues to emerge occasionally.
During a recent interview with Joseph Staszewski of The New York Post, Jon Moxley dashed fans' hopes of McMahon joining Khan's company.
“It doesn’t really matter what I think,” Moxley said. “We might as well talk about Santa Claus joining AEW. There’s zero chance. Doesn’t mean it couldn’t be, you know, f-----g cool, but like zero chance.”
AEW fans needed to hear this. Outside of another voice within the creative department and a way to torment WWE, McMahon would add nothing to their programming. He's 54 years old. It's not like he would be lighting it up inside the ring.
Sure, McMahon could provide some fun promos. He may sell some merchandise and potentially help with ticket sales. Yet, his overall value would be behind the scenes. Unfortunately, AEW already has enough voices to contend with. Adding McMahon would only create more confusion on the company's direction.
During the same interview, Moxley noted how he's trying to help AEW turn over a new page. He wants the company to evolve and begin regaining the traction it saw during its formative years. Adding McMahon would be a backward step.
Fortunately for EW, the McMahon talk is nothing but a rumor. No matter how nostalgic it would be, it wouldn't make sense for the long-term growth of the company. And right now, fresh off a new TV deal, growth is all that matters.
