Kurt Angle has waxed lyrical about Chad Gable but questioned whether WWE's reluctance to push him stems from his size. Gable shares similarities with Angle as both have Olympic wrestling backgrounds and a similar in-ring style.
Gable has been out with a rotator cuff issue since June and has been a notable absentee from WWE TV after becoming one of the most entertaining heels in the company. He fronted the group American Made before undergoing surgery, and he has long had the support of fans.
Angle knows all too well the importance of getting over organically as he blended his Olympian wrestling style with a cocky gimmick during the height of his career. He grew into a main-event talent in an era that featured the likes of The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Undertaker.
The WWE Hall of Famer gave his thoughts on Gable while a guest on The Ariel Helwani Show:
"I think he’s great. I’m just happy he was able to find his niche. I know it’s kind of identical to mine, but if it works for him I’m happy for him. I think regardless of if he did my character or anyone else’s, I think the kid’s incredibly talented, so he would have succeeded either way.
Gable, who is five-foot-eight, has yet to reach the main event picture despite fans pushing for him to be a headline act on RAW. Many hoped to see him challenge for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 40, but the honor went to Sami Zayn.
Angle opined that WWE's top brass may have reservations due to Gable's size:
"You know the problem with him, I think it’s only because the office looks at him like this but he’s a little undersized, but that’s not an excuse. Chris Benoit was 5′ 9″, Eddie Guerrero was 5′ 8″, Rey Mysterio’s 5′ 5″, so someone like Chad can be a main eventer."
Gable, 39, has been with WWE since November 2013 and has been a workhorse who arguably deserved more opportunities. He has yet to hold a singles title, although he has found success in the tag division with American Alpha and Alpha Academy.
There has long been talk of Angle managing Gable due to their similarities and because the latter has yet to reach the main event picture fully. His fellow Olympian is a massive fan, and he has previously said he'd be open to the gig if WWE offered it to him.
Angle said on his The Kurt Angle Show podcast a year ago:
"They never actually considered that [heel manager], at least with Chad. For some reason, they never decided to do another Team Angle or me team up with Alpha Academy. I think that would be a great idea. If I were going to do it, it has to be worth it to me."
Angle's comedic schtick, along with Gable's tomfoolery in backstage segments, could make for hilarious television. Seeing them interact in a wrestler-coach storyline also helps put more eyes on the American Made stable leader, who should at least have a singles title reign to his name at this stage of his career.
