The man who once went 173-0 in WCW and unseated the then-mega heel “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan in July 1998 to win his first world title stepped foot in the ring for the last time on Saturday. He’s none other than Bill Goldberg. But going toe-to-toe with Gunther was never going to be a cakewalk for ‘The Icon’. And, as it turned out, the veteran’s physically regressing body couldn’t hold up for more than 14-odd minutes.
The hometown hero passed out to a sleeper hold from Gunther, who can now boast of retiring the former WCW Champion after a near-three-decade-long career. As opposed to what the fans were thinking, the match was highly competitive.
It wasn’t one of those infamous three-minute outings from Goldberg. In fact, the latter turned it up to eleven despite a strapped left knee. Gunther had identified the Achilles’ heel quite early and kept working on it the entire time. During the closing moments, ‘Da Man’ inadvertently speared referee Charles Robinson after ‘The Ring General’ got out of harm’s way.

After growing frustrated with Goldberg’s tenacity, the former Imperium leader decided to confront the WWE Hall of Famer’s son, Gage, at the ringside. The erstwhile Walter shoved Gage on the other side of the barricade, but he retorted with a killer instinct to trade blows with Gunther.
However, the on-site security personnel held Gage back. Back in the ring, Goldberg finally clocked his rival with one final spear and a jackhammer. A new referee barged in to count, but Gunther kicked out. The Vienna-born wrestler eventually locked the Tulsa native in a sleeper hold to retain his World Heavyweight Championship.
One thing that will forever be with Goldberg is the fact that he got to retire in front of his own people and family in attendance. Moreover, his special walkout entrance from the back at Saturday Night’s Main Event featured a cavalry of men who’ve been instrumental in the 2018 Hall of Famer’s wrestling journey over the years.
Former WCW Head of Security Doug Dillinger was the one who knocked on the door of Goldberg’s locker room to give the cue that it was finally showtime. Among others were former wrestlers including Ernst “The Cat” Miller, Diamond Dallas Page , actor and ex-Hells Angels VP Chuck Zito, and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Josh Barnett. To top it off, Gage also accompanied his father to his swansong.
Incredible touch to have Dellinger, Cat, Barnett … and Goldberg’s son by his side for his final walk. Loved it. pic.twitter.com/yMAABrTxo5

Goldberg shared an emotional hug with everyone and began his march to the ring. The rest, as discussed above, didn’t go the way of the 58-year-old. Gunther had vowed in recent weeks that he would bury the legacy and myth of the wrestling icon in Atlanta. While he might’ve succeeded in scoring a win, that doesn’t undo what Goldberg has accomplished in his storied wrestling career that began in 1997.
In a move that’s being criticized all over social media, Goldberg’s post-match speech at Saturday Night’s Main Event got cut due to alleged time constraints on NBC. The former Universal Champion was on-air for less than a minute, where he apologized to the people of Atlanta for his first-ever loss in that city.
The former defensive tackle for the Falcons mentioned that there were over a hundred of his friends and family members on hand to witness his WWE farewell live in person. Goldberg finally thanked everyone who made it to Saturday Night’s Main Event and said he couldn’t have done it without them.

Last night was his first wrestling match since losing to Roman Reigns in February 2022. Moreover, in a fascinating stat, the submission loss to Gunther was Goldberg’s only fifth of its kind in his entire career. The said-and-done WWE swansong of ‘Da Man’ was long overdue, but it’s finally in the books now.
