John Cena's retirement tour is in its final stages. "The Greatest of All-Time" has 11 appearances left before he saunters off back to Hollywood to continue his rise to superstardom in the movie world.
Before Cena bows out of the WWE, he must navigate the road to his retirement match, which will undoubtedly be a spectacle. And unfortunately for Cena, it would appear that Drew McIntyre is eyeing at least one of those 11 dates for a match against the outgoing star.
During a recent appearance on the "SEN Sporting Capital Podcast," McIntyre shared his desire to face Cena before he retires. "The Scottish Warrior" also admitted that Cena's turn back into a face and his excellent match against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam played a part in his desire to face the 17-time World Champion.
“John Cena, that would be a fun match in Perth," McIntyre said (h/t Fightful for the transcription). "I need to get one of those last matches...Now that he’s back to Super Cena, if that match happens, eventually, I’ll be very happy to send him right into retirement. He’s doing a great job in Hollywood. Peacemaker is amazing. I’ll be happy to kick him out the door and continue the good work he’s doing outside of the company."
If WWE creative can figure out a way to insert McIntyre into the final stages of Cena's storyline, likely as a steppingstone to his final match, then a match would certainly be fun to watch. McIntyre knows how to make his aggression look real, which in turn could bring out the best in Cena.
As we saw at SummerSlam, Cena has another gear he can still get to when needed. McIntyre would undoubtedly help bring that back out of him. And, for as much as WWE likely wants to manage his in-ring usage in the coming months, a couple of more slobberknockers is the only correct way for him to end his Hall of Fame career.
