Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi met for a second time at WWE’s latest Premium Live Event, Clash in Italy, this past Sunday.
Femi convincingly beat Lesnar at WrestleMania 42, with the former UFC star seeming to signal his retirement from professional wrestling after the match.
However, Brock returned to attack Oba on an episode of Monday Night Raw last month, setting up the rematch at Clash in Italy. Now, by the sounds of it, a third match is on the cards at some point in the future.
In Italy, the tables were turned, and Lesnar dismantled Oba with a total of seven F5s before picking up the win.
The pair are now level with one win each, and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has shared an insight into the plans for the feud.
Despite Brock suggesting he had retired at WrestleMania 42 earlier this year, Meltzer says the plan was always for the duo to have a three-match series, with Oba coming out on top by winning the grudge match.
However, he went on to question why WWE felt they had to beat Oba at Clash in Italy.
He said: “They [WWE] want to do one and one, and then Oba wins the third, kind of like what they did with Cody and Brock a couple years ago.
“And that’s just, if you’re going to do a three-match series, which has always been the plan in this feud, was to do a three-match series, then obviously you’ve got to split one and one.
“Except you don’t. You don’t have to split one and one. There’s creative ways to do it. And having him, oh he survived six F5s and lost to a seventh F5. It’s like he didn’t need to lose.
“I cannot come up with a reason for him [Oba] losing, other than we’re doing best of three and therefore we have to split one and one.”
It is hard to argue with Meltzer’s point. Oba clearly has a huge future ahead of him, while Lesnar is towards the end of his career.
Brock by no means needed to get a win back, but having Femi lose on a B-level PLE felt somewhat flat.
Given his sheer size and aura, Oba should have remained undefeated until he eventually won a title, and then lost at some point down the line.
He’s still going to be a special attraction whenever he wrestles, but some of the shine has been taken off him by losing to Lesnar.
