Dark Horse: On the cusp of a Superbowl Run

Every year we get the perennial short-list of Superbowl contenders (Patriots, Colts, Chargers, Cowboys, Seahawks etc). I'm curious to see what team you believe has the best shot at making this year's unlikely Superbowl winner (I'm sure most Giants fans didn't believe in their team until the NFC championship game). With that said, here is a short list of possible "Dark horse" contenders for this years Superbowl:

Cleveland Browns: 10-6 usually gets a team into the playoffs. But due to the strength of the AFC, they were snubbed. With the addition of key veterans Shaun Rogers, Corey Williams and Donte' Stallworth their core talent jumped up a notch. The knock on this team will (and probably remain) their porous defense. Assuming Rogers and Williams fit the Vikings run stuffing role, added with the return of Gary Baxter fresh off of his 2nd MCL injury, their pass defense woes could continue. If their offense can put up enough points, this could be the team to beat in the AFC.

Houston Texans: That's right. You heard me. THE Houston Texans. Why? Just ask the Colts and how they gave them fits this past season. I believe this team is knocking at the Superbowl's front door. With a healthy Matt Shaub and Andre Johnson the Texans were dynamic on offense. Add to the equation TE Owen Daniels, Kevin Walter, Andre' Davis (who is an explosive KR) and the 1-2 combination of RB Ahman Green/Chris Brown. I think the Texans have an offense that will surprise most this year. The defense should be improved this year due to the recent signing of Roosevelt Colvin, who gives the Texans a much needed pass rusher opposite Mario Williams. As for the 2007 draft? I think they have one of the best sleeper CB's taken in Antwaun Molden (Reminds me a LOT of Dominique Rogers Cromartie). Look for them to be a dangerous opponent in 2008.

New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees was fairly inconsistent at the start of the year. But as the team settled down from their emotional 2006 playoff run, they seemed to gel nicely. Deuce McAllister could be the big question that needs the most attention this off season. Yet most of the rumblings have pointed toward the Saints infatuation with Jeremy Shockey (which could make their offense the " Cleveland Browns" of the NFC). Charles Grant and Will Smith give them formidable DE's. And Sedrick Ellis could prove to be the next " Warren Sapp" in time. If the Saints get on a hot streak at the end of the year, they just might come marching in.

Philadelphia Eagles (you thought I would leave this team off the list? Ha). Here is a team that lost five games by 4 points or less, and was playing as well as any team in the NFL at the end of the season. Unfortunately, the ball did not bounce the Eagles way (figuratively and literally since they had one of the NFL's worst turn-over ratios). They finished the year ranking 6th in total offense and 10th in defense. With an anemic "red zone" offense and lack of turn overs on defense, these statistics could vastly improve this year. Donovan McNabb (who's health ultimately holds the key to Phillys success) has openly asked for "playmakers" and received the top free agent playmaker in Asante Samuel. The overall team speed has been evident (so far) with the addition of Lorenzo Booker and DeSean Jackson. Jackson could play a key role with his game breaking special teams ability he flashed in college (not to mention the high praise Jerry Rice gives him a s a receiver). The linebackers are young/talented and could be the difference makers on this years team (Stewart Bradley will turn heads this season as he reminds me of Brian Urlacher). The continued improvement of Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley will prove to pay huge dividends this year. If the Lito Sheppard situation is ironed out, I believe the defense just might be strong enough to carry the Lombardi Trophy all the way back to Philly.

The Texans are on the verge of an 11-5 or 12-4 season. Love the way this team is being built

got to agree with you on this one. not sure if they can get more than 10 wins, but i think they are going to be a team that could ruin someone else's party.

I love wathcing the AFC South in general. As a Colts fan I've watched the Texans grow up and they are building a long-term, potentially SB contenders by 2011. All depends on whether Schaub is franchise or not.

true......verdict still out on Schaub. this season should tell us a lot.

I know you'll never agree with me Latin, but I have to say Denver. They got all the talent in the world, they just have to piece it all together. You gotta believe Denver is at least gonna make the playoffs cuz Shanny will never let this team miss the playoffs 3 straight years.

Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler, Robertson, Dumervil, Boss, Champ, D.J., and Dre sounds pretty good, we'll see!

san diego owns that division then u gotta make wild card over jax and cleveland or houston

I think most teams in the NFL have a chance at going to the "big dance". My main concern with Denver is the inexperience at quarterback (this is also why I left the Vikings of the list). While I think Cutler is a much better quarterback and has showed flashes of star potential (he and Jason Campbell of the Redskins looked really good at times). I think that there might not be enough firepower on offense to counteract the lack of run defense. But who knows, they could turn it all around and make a run at it. That's the cool thing about the NFL, every year is different so you just might be right.

its not gonna be up to shanny....the defensive line is god awful....itll be on the shoulders of cutler and the run game....if the corners can make plays without a defensive line...then they could be poised to make the playoffs

yeah that d-line was really bad last year......the addition of Dwayne Robertson will help a lot and if Dumervil can continue to get sacks like last year, there should be a decent improvement overall.......for Denvers D to be good it all has to do with the d-line, if they play good the entire D will play good

I'd like to say the Eagles, but it will be hard in our division. Ill always say that have the potential to be in the Big Dance. With that said, I really like the Browns. Hopefully Anderson has another outstanding year because he sure has the talent surroudning him. They are my AFC team this year.

i agree AFC team- Browns
NFC- maybe Minnesota or Arizona surprises us

Every year they pick Arizona and they always disappoint even with good talent. If Leinhart is their QB they have a couple of years yet before an NFC Championship is in their sights.

if they can keep leihnart out of the hot tub...he may do somethin'

yeah but they gotta do somethin in that weak division with seattle aging they gotta get it together now with Wisenhunt as the coach he will add D and the O will at least pull their weight if not flourish finally.

I think Philadelphia in terms of being a Blackhorse is correct for them to be called in the NFC anyways... They are the team that no matter what you Hear the Name Philadelphia Eagles the first thing you think is NFC Powerhouse... My reason though bias is because You got to admit alot of Teams Respect an may Fear facing the Eagles because you dont know what to expect from this team on any given sunday... Regardless of there Standings Last Yr.. I doubt any team that plays the Eagles will Take the Eagles Lightly because they are known for strong Bounce Backs....

I think it will be a tough one between Minnesota and Arizona Both Very Liable teams they just need to get over the hump of 8-8 7-9 seasons.....
In order to make it to the Playoffs....

Im not doubting the Fact that they cant do better but people shouldnt See the Vikings as a PLayoff Contender off the Bat My reason for being is because There QB Situation Needs to be Solid an proven to Win More Games in order to make the Playoffs and if they make it to the playoffs lets see what it takes them to but they are improving but the vikings are not yet a late playoff team( meaning that they wont make it to the Late round games) yes i know anything can happen.... but Nope not this yr....

Arizona would have the Better Chance of making a Wildcard appearance they are more potent on Offense than Defense but with there Additions there Defenses should be at best decent......

AFC yes Cleveland will be in the Playoffs if they play the way they play they are a scary team to face if they go to the playoffs watchout for them....

Houston is another team that is solid i think they are better then the Titans an will possibly surpass the titans.... houston is solid i see houston possibly passing the wildcard round... lets see....

Tavaris Jackson reminds me of Randell cunningham/Vince Young the only difference is that he probably wont have a blowout til late this yr an bringing it on to the 09-10 season....

Seahawks Seems like a Sinking Ship I think that Arizona might Get the best out of the Seahawks this yr definitly next yr... For A Fact if i were the Seahawks i would watch my Back....

As goes with the Steelers i would watch out for the Cleveland browns and i would look out for Baltimore ravens this yr.... dont be surprised if the steelers an the bengals are fighting for 3rd place while baltimore stays at 2nd place an cleveland becomes the AFC North Division Champs

steelers and bengals fighting for third? The Ravens will be ok, but the steelers own the #1 defense in the NFL. I have a feeling the bengals won't be putting up any fight this year.

I think Ravens pull off 10+ wins this year and embarrass at least one SB contender in the process. They were a good team last year that wouldn't play for Billick. I am by no means a Ravens fan but I saw a team against the Pats in Week 11 or 12 that was not the same team that played the Colts the following week and go their stuff tossed. Ravens are going to the playoffs to say the least.

I too think AZ has a great shot at winning the division. I (and Rod Woodson) have been on the AZ bandwagon the past 2 years (and the wheels fell off). But now that I'm trying to "ignore" their potential, maybe they will actually live up to it this year? Would be nice for a change. I'm tired of seeing them under perform and miss the playoffs year in and out.

If Defense and running the ball win championships, then you have to put Minnesota up there. They may have the best Defense and best RB in the NFC.

They upgraded the WR's over the offseason, and added the NFL sack leader to an allready potent Defensive line

I would say that Minnesota is on the rise. They made good moves in the off-season and they have the best RB in football. I think they are were the Eagles were just before they went to the Super Bowl.

They do got a great Defense an Awesome RB.... There QB should be better it would be a great game to see if both Eagles an Vikings PLay each other in the playoffs..... But the Offense allready knows the Vikings Defense an with a healthy Mcnabb can Shred it apart.... They dont have a Great Secondary.... And dont be surprised with there WR Bernard Berrian if they end up Passing which in my books may not pan out well for Tavaris Jackson but if they stick to the Running Game they will do better.....

they were 8-8 that isnt bad that is good for being Vastly improved from there previous record 6-10 but they are in the same division as the Packers so With packers transition it might be close but imma give it to the Vikings this yr i think they can get to a potential 11-5 Packers could be 10-6 or 9-7 so it will be good....

we saw that game already, we killed them

I really want the Eagles to be 12-4 can they be Yes they can realistically they maybe 11-5 or 10-6....

I know im changing the Subject but what do u guys think?

I think the Jags are on there way They have a QB how makes good secisions and one of the best running games in the game a good OL. A new and improved Dl with Harvey and Groves and Henderson still stopping the run. They have good linebackers and when Mike Peterson is healthy he is a top 10 MLB. There secondary is good with Mathis a Top CB and Reggie Nelson a young safety. They might go all the way this year.

good decisions

TC with all honesty, dude i dont see Denver making playoffs ur run game is weak u have line problems offensively and defensively and youre still having secondary woes despite having a Football god at corner

Texans- ok team 9-7 year but not playoffs id disagree with you latin

Saitns theyll make playoffs but in the end they wil choke like romo

cleveland- wwill be a factor until they play colts, chargers, or jags (where are they)

and i figure eagles taking it home this year but well see i kno im overly passionate but damn i have the best safety of all time YEA GO GREEN

the run game has always been there, and it will be better this year cuz the o-line is going to be very good this year....the d-line might be iffy but other than that, they are solid

the secondary should improve this year too cuz they won't have help with the run defense as much, and we have Champ, which says it all

Denver D line, back seven solid....agreed has youth and technique to overcome...and as we all saw in SB, obvious big factor in dictating tempo, especially lethal DE's...man, getting amped of 'the thing" that is in all of us in this big bad ass country...sorry all, got too amped! ha

the Broncos have a good run game cause Selvin Young is the TRUTH

yeah cuz

it is the truth i watch him in college he is a ticking
time bomb

Jags wont win against colts though,

JAX and CLE, one of them getting in AFC Championship with SD...or maybe not, but Like Cleveland by good chunk on list

Cleveland has a ton of talent, but for some reason I have a feeling they won't live up to expectations....Jax is real good, real good

yeah, they have a wide open O now

i agree with u on cleveland...everyone hypes them up and they remind me of the saints...one great offensive year and theyll really turn into a troubled team come this season

If stopping the run and running the ball won championships, the Vikings would have won it all last year. No one did those things better... yet they were what, 8-8? Jared Allen may give them another win or two this year if Purple Jesus stays healthy, and may help cover up what is probably the worst pass defense in the league, but they aren't anywhere near a Super Bowl team. They probably have a better than average chance at making the playoffs, since Favre is gone from GB, the Lions are still run by Matt Millen, and Chicago still employs Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman.
Truth is, this is a passing league. Everyone can wax nostalgic about "the good old days" and watch the NFL Network for Steel Curtain replays, but the rules have changed and so has the game. It's all about passing the ball and stopping the pass now. AP would be welcome on any team, of course, but if you can't pass the ball, you're doomed to a .500 season even with the best left side of the line and best RB in the league.
As a Texans fan, though, I'm getting nervous about the simmering (soon to be boiling) hype around my team. I will be supremely happy with 10-6 next year, playoffs or not. As good as Sage looked on highlight reels, he's a backup for a reason. Kubiak played it safe with him and he still threw too many INTs and got lucky on a few balls that he aired out. Schaub looked pretty good but never got settled in. I'm sorely missing Dunta Robinson, and the team is too; we got away with a few games there when he was out. Hopefully Fred Bennett does a good Dunta Robinson impression, and Antwaun Molden does a good Fred Bennett impression!

Glad to see that there are some Houston Texans fans on this site. You should post more!

Its all about staying HEALTHY for the Texans. They have led the league in IR visits the past two seasons. Bad luck all around. We lost most notably A. Green, D. Robinson, A. Johnson, and M. Schaub for significant time last year yet we STILL went 8-8. If we can stay healthy... there is no telling. If not this year though.... this Texans team is being build for the long term. The future is bright!
Go Texans!!

i agree they have built a pretty solid contender there

THE EAGLES CAN DO IT! IF MCNABB STAYS HEALTHY, AND WESTBROOK RUNS ELUSIVELY, THE RECEIVERS COULD STEP UP AND SCORE AS A SURPRISE THIS SEASON. THEY TWO SOLID #2 RECEIVERS BUT NOT JUST THE #1 RECEIVER. THE D-FENCE IS AMAZING! DESEAN JACKSON WILL BE A GREAT PUNT RETURNER AND KICK RETURNER, AS WELL AS A SLANT RECEIVER. MORE TURNOVERS THIS YEAR WITH SAMUEL, LITO, AND SHELDON ( JUST AS REGGIE BUSH HOW HARD SHELDON CAN HIT), DAWKINS ( IF HEALTHY, ALGE CRUMPLER KNOWS DAWKINS VERY WELL FROM 2004 NFC CHAMP. GAME), AND I REALLY LIKE QUINTIN MIKELL. TRENT COLE, CLEMONS, AND PATTERSON, BUNKLEY, AND JUQUA OR BRYAN SMITH CAN RUSH THE PASS AND SACK ROMO(HOMO), MANNING, AND CAMBELL(???). GO EAGLES!!!! E-A-G-L-E-S! SEE U IN FEBRUARY WHEN WE PLAY IN SUPERBOWL XLIII
