Did Favre Ask the Packers to Release Him?

This story is getting stranger by the minute.

Just hours after news broke that Brett Favre might be getting the itch to play another season, the Wisconsin State Journal is reporting that Favre has already contacted the team about returning and the Packers rebuffed him. The conversation ended with Favre's agent, Bus Cook, demanding that his client be released and the Packers refusing to do so.

The thought of Favre playing for another team makes me sick to my stomach. The last thing I want to see would be for this relationship to get contentious. If Favre is serious about coming back and serious about the commitment it would take, I say let him come back. Apologize to Aaron Rodgers and ask him kindly to wait another year for his shot.

I do like the theory that the Packers are testing Favre to see how serious he is about returning, but this situation has the potential to get very ugly very quickly.

Let him come back. Why not? He's the man and will probably still perform on the same level as always. Shoot, we'll take him in Miami. Come on down Bret.

I think that the Pack should either take him back or release him. If they don't want him back as a starter, then they could ask him if he wants to be Rodgers back-up. I understand that they don't want to jerk Aaron around after making him the starter, but it would be stupid not to find a place for Favre on the active roster. If they don't want to play ball with Brett, then he should be allowed to go to a team like Minnie or Chicago and play for a contender. I would love to see him win another title and ring.

I'm a huge Farve fan! BUT, he has had his time he blew the championship last year, too cold for him to play. He needs to stay retired, he talked about it for 2 years & gave all us Packer Fans a very good last year. All he is doing is ruining his reputation. He went out on top he neeeds to stay there! I love Brett but this saga has been going on too long.

I don't think he would settle for a back up position, that would just be insulting to a champion like Brett. Although I don't think Chi-town would be a good place for him, Minnesota could definitly benefit from Brett taking the ball. Him and Peterson together would make that offense very potent.

1st. Greenbay would be total idiots to release Brett to ANY team in the NFC north. 2nd. Greenbay should talk to him espicially after the comments Rodgers said earlier about the fans. 3rd If Brett was to go to another league and team it would have to be with a team that desperately needs Favres talent, like Miami, San Fan. and not a team that has an astableshed QB.

I definitely agree with a move to Miami, but that is a pipe dream that would never happen.

I hear ya. I read that article from the WSJ, really don't know what to think.
From what i've read today, Favre has dismissed everything said.

Who knows..but I couldn't imagine him anywhere else :(

Favre is the man in GB. WE all miss him and we want him back. Life will not be the same with Aaron Let Brett back

Green Bay you are nuts!!!! This man has made you what you are today and Aaron Rodger can not hold a candle to him. If he wants back he should be back!!! He is by far better than anything you could ever hope for. Its ironic to see how short your memory is on how he carried this team for you in the dog days and you have the guts to say no. If you cant handle it let him go!!!! God know i will follow him and watch what he does and leave you idiots on the wayside in a heartbeat

"Apologize" to Aaron Rogers and ask him to wait another year? How long has he been waiting already?
Let the man play! He'll never get that time back. Not to mention that he's going to antagonize a lot of Green Bay fans if he doesn't hit the ground running and play in a spectacular fashion immediately. He's already got an extremely difficult act to follow.

Farve's returning would only be detrimental to the team. He's not going to get them to a Super Bowl.

Farve's over-inflated ego is really getting old - and annoying. And let's not forget that if his drug addiction problems had occurred after Goodell took over, he'd find himself in a great deal of trouble. His record for total numer of games in a row might not be the same if it weren't for all those pills. Now he acts like he's Mr. Perfect - poster boy for the "clean" side of the NFL. Makes me sick.

Good grief...

First of all..this a rumor, not fact.

Secondly, Who cares how long Aaron Rodgers has to wait? He's been on the roster 3 years. Most back ups are lucky to even have the opportunity to play at all... period. He may just need to get on board with that or shut up..lol (I like Aaron, btw)

Third..Brett is never going to be detrimental to GB. Can't get us to a Super Bowl? lmao. Logic at it's best.
He can get us to a Super Bowl as well as any QB in the league. It takes more than one person to get to a Super Bowl.
There are a lot of great QBs that haven't been to the Super Bowl or achieved that ring. It will always take the whole team clicking in order to make that happen. Favre could do it as well as anyone else.

Forth..Favres over-inflated ego is neither old nor annoying.
What IS old and annoying is every pissy person that has nothing better to do than whine constantly about his over-inflated ego.

Fifth..drug problems. I know, like Favre is the first pro athlete (or anyone for that matter) to have issues with perscription drugs. Yeah..that's life. People 'ef up. Thats life, he kicked it and moved on. We all should...I've never seen him pretend to be the poster boy for the "clean" side of the NFL.
Maybe the media makes him out to be, but i've yet to read or hear anything from the man that has ever tempted to portray himself as perfect.

Favre was discharged from re-hab in 1996. He had plenty of injuries from '96 to '07. If you think pain killers kept him on the field all those years you are ignorant. Pain killers work while you're in bed and NOT MOVING. I thought I could play ball soon after my knee surgery bc I had pain killers, but it doesn't work that way. Do your homework.

trying to secure the all time interception record forever I guess... kudos Brett "overated" Favre

brat.

lmao :)

he just needs to go away, his prime has passed. Everyone had been dragging this out way too damn much. Its sad to watch really

He had a MVP-caliber year last season. His prime is passed... of course it is, he's in his late 30's. But he can still lead a team.

I agree that this "will I or won't I?" business is tiresome, but we've never been in his position, so we can't say how tough it is to retire when you're still playing at a high level.

if 28TDs to 15TINTs is MVP I'm never watching football again.
Vinny Testaverde can still lead a team but we both know it's not a great idea.... the team around him played well and they won, then super-ego Favre gets 99.9% of the credit.
if he wanted to play still then he needs to have said that some time ago, this back n forth BS is unfair to the team and the fans.... who will both be around much longer than him. Its selfish to make the team guess like this every single off-season for 5 years.

It would tarnish Brett's legacy to play for another team, especially a division rival like Chicago, or Minnesota. Packers would never just release him when he could make the Vikings all that much better.

The thought of Favre in another uniform (much less a Vikings or Bears uni) sends a chill down my spine.

This season, Packer-Backers worldwide will witness just how good Brett Favre made Packers Head-Coach Mike McCarthy and Packers GM Ted Thompson look... from his masterful reads, check-downs, and audibles at the line of scrimmage... to his LEADERSHIP and contributions on the field, in the locker-room, and in the community. Last week, Bonita Favre (Brett's mother) commented that the Packers organization "did not go out of its way to bring Brett back over the course of the past two seasons"... and that is an absolute truth. In fact, many of us die-hards here in Green Bay believe that Bonita was speaking directly to Ted Thompson. Hey Mr. Thompson, you got your wish... and we will now see just how good you (and your enormous ego) do WITHOUT FAVRE LEADING THE PACK.
As always... GO PACK! -84 year old Green Bay Packers die-hard
PS: Teddy, you ain't no Lombardi.

Who cares about hurting litle aaron rodgers feelings??? He is not on the same level as Brett and never will be. The packers best chance of winning it this season is to get Brett back. He is a once in a life time player who still has alot of gas left in his tank!

Of course Ted is no Lombardi. You remember a center Green Bay had named Jim Ringo? HOF, 7 year all pro, in his prime. Lombardi had a policy of not wanting players to have agents. His reasoning? Football players are all college graduates. You don't need an agent to negotiate a contract.
So Ringo shows up with his agent to work on a new contract. Lombardi tells them to wait outside his office, he's got something to finish up quick and would get right to them. They come back in three minutes later and his agent asks whats the deal? Lombardi said I'm not the one you want to talk to. As of one minute ago, Ringo is now property of the Philidelphia Eagles! Ted has treated Favre with kid gloves while Favre changes his mind daily. Lombardi would have "S" canned him long ago. Guess how many other players tried this while Lombardi was in Green Bay? 0

Brett Favre is the best thang smoking in GREENBAY.Yeh, Arron Rodgers looked good against my cowboys last year after we hurt brett, but he ain't ready. Mr. Ted Thompson just release him and he'll show you why you should have kept him. P.S your stupid ted go get back in the bed!
