Fbkid's top ten cornerback tandems

Cornerback is one of the most important positions in all of football. If you have bad corners, it will change the total outcome of the game as teams will pass on you early and often. If you have good corners, nobody will pass on you and if you can stop the run, you are in great shape to win. Many teams with good corners are also among the leagues elite. Here is my list of who I think are the top ten cornerback tandems in the league.

1. Asante Samuel, Lito Sheppard Eagles: Many considered Samuel one of the top free agents this year. When the Eagles signed him to pair up with Sheppard, offensive coordinators in the NFC cringed. Both Samuel and Sheppard are among the elite corners in the game and have proven track records. Plus Sheldon Brown in the nickel, is not too shabby himself and would be a starter for most teams in the league.

2. Al Harris, Charles Woodson Packers: Harris and Woodson may be older then most of the corners on the list, but that doesn't mean that they still can't play. Harris got more national attention, but Woodson had the better season as he had 4 and 9 pass deflections. Harris excels in the bump and run which is why he struggled against a much taller receiver in Plaxico Burress. This tandem though should fair well again this season in a division with a weak passing game.

3. Antonio Cromartie, Quentin Jammer Chargers: When talking about the best corners in the league, Cromartie is one of the first ones mentioned. Last year he led the league with 10 interceptions but a good part of that was because Jammer was so good. Jammer last year shut down most of the receivers that came his way and that was a main reason why he only had one interception. With Cromartie still developing and Jammer in his prime, the Chargers are a scary duo.

4. Champ Bailey, Dre' Bly Broncos: Heading into last season, this tandem would have been on top of everybody's list. Many feel that Bailey is the best corner in the league and Bly is among the top 15. But last year Bailey had an average year and Bly would've had a hard time covering a baby with a blanket. Bailey went on to have 84 tackles and 3 interceptions but a mediocre season for Bailey is a career best for pretty much anyone else.

5. Terence Newman, Pacman Jones Cowboys: Newman actually had a very good year last year as he had 50 tackles and 4 interceptions. Those numbers are why the Cowboys gave him the contract they did. Jones may not have played a down in the league for a year, but he was becoming an elite corner in the league before his suspension. If his progress continues, Dallas could have a very good secondary but if he fails, they could always use first round draft pick Mike Jenkins. The Cowboys could have a very good secondary this year, now they just have to do something about Roy Williams.

6.Nnadmi Asomugha, DeAngelo Hall Raiders: This duo could be at the very top of this list next year is everything goes as planned in Oakland. Many think that Hall is the better corner, but it is acutally Asomugha as many see him as a top 5 corner in the league. Hall has the potential to be great, but as of now he gambles on to many plays and that doesn't work out most of the time. With this duo and Michael Huff and Gibril Wilson at safety, the Raiders could have one of the best young secondaries in the league.

7. Marcus Trufant, Kelly Jennings Seahawks: Trufant has been one of the best corners in the league ever since he was drafted in 2003. He continued his success with a career best 7 interceptions last year. Jennings is a young corner who improved throughout the course of the season as he had 12 pass deflections. With Trufant in his prime and Jennings improving, this tandem could be even higher next year.

8. Ken Lucas, Chris Gamble Panthers: This duo was much higher around year ago, but both players have started slipping a little. Lucas had a solid season with 13 pass deflections and 2 interceptions. While Gamble ended the year with 6 pass deflections and 1 interception. The Panthers also have young defensive back Richard Marshall who when he played, was the best out of all of them, don't be surprised if he takes a starting spot this year.

9. Ronde Barber, Phillip Buchanon Bucs: It's hard to believe but Ronde Barber is still playing at a high level. Last year Barber had 14 pass deflections with 2 interceptions. Buchanon had lots of balls thrown his way due to Barber's play but held his own with 10 pass deflections and 3 interceptions. With first round pick Aqib Talib developing and two young stars in Tanard Jackson and Jermaine Phillips at safety, the Bucs could have one of the best secondaries in the league in a few years.

10. Charles Tillman, Nathan Vasher Bears: If not for injuries, this tandem would be much higher. Tillman played very well last season as he had 13 pass deflections and 3 interceptions. While Vasher only played 4 games this season and had 1 interception. Look for this duo if healthy, to be much higher on the list next year.

You know me FB, I'd have Champ and Dre #1, but solid list overall.

I know TC, Champ is the best in the game in my opinion though. We have come to know what we will get from Champ so if Bly has a better year, the Broncos should at least be in the top two.

I think Bly will be much better this season because the Broncos have a new Defensive Coordinator Bob Slowik with a whole different defense than last season with Jim Bates. He has said he feels much more comfortable. I guess we'll see.

off topic, i always read all your blogs FBkid, i don't reply but i do prop & read them. of couse i love the eagles mention, but the raiders one is what caught my eye. i've a ton of friends in PA that are raiders fans. thanks for this, i'm going to make sure they see it.

Thanks CK! I'm glad you like them! I hope your friends enjoy the list as well.

great list man...some love for lito and asante the NASTY duo at corner the obvious best!!!...i think the raiders pair should be moved up a lil and i dont know if id put gamble and lucas on there but its your list i respect it great job i like your top 10's

You're right fbkid, with the evolution of the passing game Corner has become one of the premier positions. However it's hard to look at the effectiveness of Corners without recognizing the influence of the pass rush. Pressure from the front four can make average corners look good. On the other hand, even the best "shut-down" corners (an oxymoron) can't cover for long if the QB has enough time and an unobstructed view of the field.

As for your rankings a couple of things worth remembering:
1-PacMan hasn't been cleared to play by the commish.
2-Lito Sheppard will be traded for Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Don Hutson or Kate Hudson any day now!

Pac-man is in a situation where if he does nothing wrong he plays. Basically he is going to play.

You act like Pacman is a sensible human being capable of keeping himself out of trouble. Sounds easy enough for you and me...but he is an absolute moron.

Solid list FB, but then again, it can't not be solid saying that Al Harris and Pacman are each on it.

also Buchanon is being pushed for the 2nd spot at corner by Aqib Talib. According the Tampa's coaching staff, they wouldn't be surprised if Talib starts day 1 next to Barber.

Nice, ive been wating for some 1 to do this but good job...Lito looks to be staying in philly with sumthing to prove and kinda sorta same with asante that he has the intangibles of a great corner....Plus with Sheldon at nickel those three are def the best trio....

fbkid, you always make really solid lists. again, i think people are giving pacman way too much credit for a guy that's been away from football for a year and filled in the spaces with TNA wrestling. but still, your positions are defensible.

thats the list except for cowgurls

The scariest part of the San Diego combo is that they just drafted Antion Cason, the Thorpe Award winner last year. He will be a shut down corner in the league and is now under no immediate pressure to rush himself. He gets to learn from Jammer who has been a consumate professional throughout his carreer. Sometimes the old sayings are right, and this time the rich are really getting richer.

Loving San Diegos wrecking crew. I can't enough of watching those guys snuff out plays, and wrap up would be gains, and just like MattRandle said, with the addition of Antion Cason, they're are surely going to be a force to be reckoned with. I foresee less "Flats" passes against San Diego.

Cason is a ball hawk...just wait he might be the defensive rookie of the year in that system

In actuality Asante was to be paired with sheldon, and most likely Sheldon will be the #2 guy. Don't know where you get that he is our nickel guy. Don't think Lito will be around much longer, even still he works the left side, sheldon will keep his spot. If anything, Lito's health would put him at the nickel spot.

just trying to double check but i believe that lito is set to be the nickel b/c asante and lito play the same position? correct or incorrect?

Pretty good list except I would have put Nnadmi Asomugha and DeAngelo Hall in front of Bailey and Bly mainly because Bly was down right terrible last year. Where as Hall and Asomugha were both good on their respected teams, even though Hall freaked out on the Falcons, while he was in the game though he did well, much better than Bly. I had the Broncos defense in Fantasy Football and I had to drop them because of how bad Bly was doing giving up crazy yardage. I also would say you are getting ahead of yourself with Pacman on the list since he isn't even cleared to play yet. But besides they those two differences my list would be pretty close to the same. Maybe switch the last two, but I would have to look into it.

Philip Buchanon? Sorry, but I have to completely disagree. I realize he was a first round pick some years ago, but he's been a journeyman ever since. The Niners had a better duo with Clements and Harris, and how can you leave off Jacksonville's threesome of Williams, Mathis and Florence?

Clements is good but last year he wasn't worth all the money the 49ers paid him. Plus I'm a Jags fan and the threesome isn't as good as it looks on paper. Mathis went from being one of the most underrated corners in the league to overrated in a year. Plus they are possibly moving Brian Williams to safety.

Hey atleast ur not being biased and amiting the truth and Mathis was a beast 2 yrs ago...Clements isnt that good at all

Solid reasoning which I accept, yet I still respectfully disagree.

the list is good but the order is not. Hall and Asomougha are ranked at least 3 spots too low. I mean when you have a pro-bowl caliber type like Hall and team him with THE MOST UNAPPRECIATED and UNRECOGNISED corner in the league. WOW I think O coordinators cringed more when they heard about this move. ( until they remebered the Raiders run D) Nnamdi only had 39 passes thrown his way all year. Thats right 39 less than 3 passes towards him a game. Lastly to see P Buch on this list is also disheartening. He is pure garbage. Talib will be the starter in TB

ok ok we know DeAngelo is overrated, but not that much. Hes like the 6th best corner and nnamdi is at elast in the top 12. point is, they are better than terence newman and pacman. Terence is overrated, sheldon brown owns his @$$, and pacman has game, but both of them together are nothing compared to the raiders tandem. AND... packers tandem is old, and Al Harris couldnt cover a talented receiver for his life, he could be the best nickel corner in the history of the NFL, but um... that doesnt say much. I say start Jarrett Bush lol jk. but Harris and woodson shouldnt rank #2 as CB tandem at secondaryu theyre good because of Bigby but not as CB Tandem. Woodson however is like fine wine. as for cromartie and jammer like the props well deserved i guess. i would like to see Hall and Asoumgha up there but it makes sense. Good list, as for the bucs and panthers, it doesnt really matter cus they syuck no matter how much i love steve smith and joey galloway its true. but i dont think its fair leaving out the Cardinals Roderick Hood (we missed him in Philly has like 5ints last year i think) and soon to be the next AC Dominique Cromartie. also missing are Mike McKenzie and Randall gay its worth a try. what about sam madison and corey webster madison a 4 time pro bowler should get some props. good list but add the cards and giants and bucs will have a good secondary but eagles will be better, we will lose the greatest safety of all time but well have demps q ikegwonu and samuel and shep to own other o's. Sheldon and Buck ought to be traded only so they can start and make a name for themselves, i want to keep them but after we win the superbowl this year they can be free to go.

DeAngelo Hall blows

Tillman-Vasher at #10 is fair. As is your assessment that they'd be higher if not for injuries!

Jammer Finally Getting some love... About time he is a shut down corner and should make the pro bowl next season

Lets talk all time, Vincent and Bobby in Philly anyone.

this is a good list. Samuel and Sheppard will make a great tandem but tht is if Sheppard still is on the team by7 the regular season

Nice job with the list FB but you cant forget about Rashean Mathis and Terry Cousin for the jags who have sick dreads and the new addition Drayton Florence. Remember the jags also have brian williams at saftey who they can always move down. But anyway good job on the article.

Good points, but Terry Cousin signed with the Browns a few weeks ago.

and Rashean

i like this list, i think its pretty accurate. but thats why they play the game. do this list again after the superbowl.
