Every team's fans gripe about officiating, especially when they've lost a couple. The Ravens, though, have been the victims of two officiating mistakes that resulted not from a judgment call, but from a blatant misapplication of the rules. In today's game against Cincinnati, Joe Flacco completed short pass to receiver Mark Clayton on the right side of the field. Clayton was brought down at the 25, losing the ball as his knee struck the ground. The officials correctly ruled him down by contact, and the play was upheld on review. In the replay, Clayton clearly was tackled directly on the breast cancer awareness ribbon at the 25 yard line.Referee Terry McAuly is the culprit this time. When the ball was spotted after the review, the officials placed the ball at the 20, not the 25. The Ravens faced 3rd and 16, rather than 3rd and 11. Cincinnati promptly jumped offsides, which should have resulted in a Ravens 3rd and 6 at the 30. The Ravens, with a 3rd and 11 deep in their own e...

Chalk It Up To Growing Pains

Joe Flacco had his worst game of the 2009 season on Sunday against the Bengals. While he completed more than 70% of his passes, only 4 of those completions went to receivers. Flacco also threw two interceptions, one on the Ravens final offensive play. It wasn’t performance, but it was not the Joe Cool performance [...]

Rice: Instant redemption

The Ravens appeared to be in full self-destruct mode when Ray Rice was called for a chop block to take them out of field goal range. Rice made up for it in a hurry, catching a short pass from Joe Flacco and breaking out of a scrum to sprint all the way into the end zone. The 48-yard touchdown pass put the Ravens back in the lead with just under seven minutes to go, but they've...

Priest Holmes honored in pre-game ceremony

KANSAS CITY - Looking very much like he could still play, Priest Holmes received a framed Chiefs No. 31 jersey in a pre-game ceremony. The Chiefs wanted to honor their all-time leading rusher because they didn't get a chance to say a proper goodbye after he retired in October 2008 because of lingering injuries. Holmes, a product of San Antonio Marshall and the University of...

Instant analysis of Ravens' 17-14 loss to Bengals

Here's what our reporters thought of Sunday's game at M&T Bank Stadium Ken Murray: Defensive penalties turned the game; none bigger than the personal foul on Ray Lewis when he knocked Chad Ochocinco's helmet off. Mike Preston: Ravens show little interest, and can't steal one at home. Kevin Cowherd: Bengals are for real. Ravens mistakes doomed them all day...

Ray Lewis’ Failed Decapitation Of Ochocinco

Another thrilling victory from the Bengals, I hope this train never slows down.  Here’s the crucial unnecessary roughness penalty on Ray Lewis that kept the game-winning drive alive:

Baltimore Ravens 14, Cincinnati Bengals 17

The Baltimore Ravens (3-2) had some very costly penalties for the second week in a row as they fell to the Cincinnati Bengals (4-1) Sunday.  With the Ravens up by seven with less than a minute to play, Frank Walker was called for pass interference and the Bengals got the ball on the twenty yard [...]

Season Starts Sunday

You can't learn anything from the first quarter of the season.  Nothing.  Zero.  The Baltimore Ravens were the best team in football after three meaningless wins.  Patriots.  Loss.  Bengals.  Loss.  The New York Giants are currently the cream of the crop, having beaten the crappy Redskins, bad Cowboys, awful Bucs, piss poor Chiefs and beyond...

Ravens host reborn Bengals

BALTIMORE | Marvin Lewis chuckled when reminded that the winner of Sunday's game between his Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens will gain sole possession of first place in the AFC North. "That would be fleeting," the coach said. "If we were playing a five-game schedule, I'd feel good about that." Lewis knows the standings after the first four...

Three days after wife's death, Mike Zimmer leads Bengals to win

It was impressive enough that Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was on the sideline Sunday, three days after the unexpected death of his wife, Vikki. But then Zimmer's unit held the AFC's best offense to just 14 points and led the Bengals to the franchise's biggest win in years. Before the game, Zimmer's defense dedicated their effort to the memory...
