Suspend Belichick?

All the info is finally out. We know that Belichick has been cheating for years. He didn't do all the things that were reported and it can be argued that knowing some defensive plays might not matter. As Phil Simms said in an interview that back in 1980 they knew every play the Chargers were going to run, and they still got 44 put up on them. Interestingly enough Bill Belichick was on that staff as well.

The Commissioner has been tough on players since he took the reigns, handing down several suspensions, so why hasn't he suspended Belichick? The rule about Steroids is very clear-don't use them. The rule about taping is very clear too-don't do it. The rules are in place to keep players and teams from getting unfair advantages so I think Goodell needs to lay down a suspension on Belichick. Some journalists [ESPN's Greg Easterbrook] have called for a season long or even a lifetime ban. I think that is a bit much but I see no reason not to suspend him for 4-8 games.

Agree? Disagree?

i'm in the middle & the reason i say that is because i'm looking at what has been done to the franchise as a whole because of this. if they suspend him, then what?

i agree with you re: the rules being in place for players & teams!!!

so now it's rogers' turn to step up & figure out for coaches, staff etc..how this will have the ole "trickle down effect"

it's a hard call & the damage has def. been done, i for one, feel bad for the team & the franchise, because of this mans actions.

good article wjbrown i'm all for checking into the owner of this franchise why didn't he stop this

I just do not see the point in suspending a coach. Is it really an effective punishment? I mean christ they took away their first round pick which couldve landed them a great player. They won 3 super bowls cheating...mad props to them for not getting caught till years later.

i think roger needs to hold coaches to the same standard as players, and the pick they lost was a late first round pick so not that big a deal. And I think suspending the coach and not allowing him to be around the team at all (like they do with suspended players) could be really effective. Not that is matters cause I don't think it will happen

well it does matter WJ, i dig this blog of yours & i'm curious to see what others think, kudo's to you for steppin up & even asking the question!!!

and i agree with you wjbrown

This story first broke when our quarterback coach was suspended for a legal prescription he received at his former team's complex. There was no sneaking, nothing illegal. Belichick cheats, orders others to cheat right after being told that he couldn't do what he did. In my opinion, it was a clear double standard by Godell. Don't come down hard on players and assistant coaches and ignore the head coaches. He got a "bonus" right after the fine was handed out, for pete's sake. In effect he didn't even pay the fine, Kraft did.

good call on the cowboys coach i had forgotten about that

Another story that first broke was Jimmy Johnson announcing that he did the same thing as Belechick for years with Dallas and Miami. He made these quotes during an interview with the N.Y. daily news in the Dec. 12 editon. If you would like to read more about the Cowboys cheating during the Jimmy Johnson era, the article is titled Spy for a spy. I respect Jimmy Johnson for coming forward.

id say its time for everyone to let this go. if goodell says the investigation is closed, why do ppl still keep talking about suspending him? its now a done issue... if he does it again, then revisit it then.

i bring it up because i did not feel the nfl did their job. the man cheated for 8 years and should be punished

just about every coach cheats in some way or another even Jay Fiedler admitted that the Dolphins staff would steal the Pats defensive signals and then use it to their advantage (just not via video) and that got barely any notice. the fine fit the crime in this occasion, goodell had to punish him but wasnt going to go all out cause he knows its league wide.

Nice post. There still are alot of people that think the Pats are the only ones that did this. Teams have been doing this for twenty years.

I agree. The commissioner has made a decision on this. It's old hat now. Let's get over it and move on. The continuation of this thing by Arlen Specter is not going to get anywhere either. Just beating a dead horse.

BAN HIM FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to read a piece of an artice from the Dec. 12th edition of the N.Y. daily news. The articleis titled Spy for a Spy: Jets started video battle. It's about the Jets illegally videotaping the Pats in their meeting in 2006 at Foxborough stadium. Their cameraman was escorted off the premises and the Patriots didn't pursue it. In their very next meeting Mangini returned the favor but brought it to a whole higher level and now we have spygate. Belichick was wrong for continuing to tape after the memo was sent out by the commissioner for all teams to stop because it was just too wide spread and he was disciplined for it. The most interesting quote I thought was by Jimmy Johnson "former Cowboy and Dolphin coach." Johnson tells the news. "Everybody made too much out of it when it happened. This has been going on for twenty years. I did it too." That's at least four teams that did the same thing as the Patriots. Johnson cheated while coaching Dallas and Miami. Mangini did it with the Jets. Belechick did it with the Pats. They all cheated. Get over it. It was common practice. Why do you think the Steelers owner said it had no effect on the outcome of their games with the Pats? They were all doing it. If Belichick did it with the Giants, then Parcells obviously knew about it. Now Parcells cheated.

Hell, Mangini was part of it when he was with the Pats, wasn't he? That's what I have heard. And, you're right. Every team has stolen signals and , like I said before, teams have to devise ways to keep the signals from getting stolen. And, even if you do steal them, you still have to execute the plays. It's been blow out of proportion and now it's over. The Pats just did a better job of cheating than anyone else did.

It has been blown way out of proportion just like Jimmy Johnson said. My only problem with this next investigation is I know it won't be run like the Mitchell report in baseball which investigated all teams. Specter will have the investigation focus just on the Patriots. He's a sore loser and knows nothing about football. I applaud Jimmy Johnson for being honest about his teams cheating. I wish more coaches would come forward and admit it. Like you said Fiver, you still have to execute the plays.

hmmmm, maybe they need to go after bob kraft, i mean really, bellichick works for kraft n has to do what the boss says. he might be the real one behind this scam.

This whole thing is rediculous. The only thing that makes it 'cheating' is the videotaping part..which can be done from over head just as successfully as from the sidelines, and from over head is LEGAL! so whats the difference? If they were videotaping, I am sure they were doing it from above and below! dumb

Jason2, you are leaving out part of your story. Jimmy Johnson said he stole signals not that he videotaped them and the plays they represented. I don't care if everyone was doing it. Like I said earlier, if our coach was suspended for a legal prescription received at his FORMER team's complex Belichik should have missed games. Period. He was caught attempting to get a competitive advantage which is why our qb coach was suspended. You tell me which was the worse infraction.

No Cowboyswin08 he did admit to videotaping signals. You can find several articles by punching in Jimmy Johnson illegaly stealing signals into a search. He clearly states that he videotaped signals illegally and he is even asked a second time because the reporter is somewhat surprised by his response. Don't be shocked! Many people outside New England don't know the Cowboys did this during their superbowl runs. I'm not taking anything away from your rings because you did deserve it. You did exactly what Belechick did and I don't take anything away from the Pats.

Actually, I taped them for Jimmy with my video camera. I do have seats where I can get the best view of the opposing coaches signals. Don't tell Arlen Specter though. And, I don't agree with the Wade Wilson thing either. That was a bunch of horses**t.

If you ever need a game off, fiverings, I have a great video recorder. I know how it sucks to work on Sundays, so all you have to do is call.

LOL........I might have to work on Sundays this coming fall, which will be a bummer, but I'm going to try my best to get out of it. I have OU season tickets and Cowboy season tickets, so I am very busy going up to Norman and to games here. There will be a couple I won't miss though, one in particular on September 15th. I know you know which one that will be. Loan me that camera so I can take it up to Lehigh and start taping the Eagles practice sessions.

No problem, especially if you're headed to Lehigh. Hey, speaking of 9/15, why don't you wear a pink Romo jersey to the game and I will watch for you on the television.
On a side note, are you given priority on season tickets for the new stadium and how much have they gone up? I know that there were several write ups on the web site but I haven't really read any of them.

Tickets are very expensive for the new stadium. The club has not contacted me about renewing yet. They are currently about three months behind schedule and I think that is because they are having problems selling the premium seats right now. Yes, I have priority to move. It's just a matter of when they will call me to give me the bad news on pricing. We're talking triple the price for seat options and maybe almost double on game tickets. And, no pink jersey for me. I wouldn't be caught dead in one of those. I'll leave that to Jessica and all of the cute little girlies who think it's so fashionable.

Well, how am I supposed to find you? You are going to have to give a little here. How about a pink Marion Barber hat?
Wow, almost makes me glad I live so far away. I'd hate to have to choose between feeding and caring for my daughter and season tickets. Luckily the Bears just aren't very tempting.

Come on, man. Just break down and get you a pink Urlacher jersey and go to some games.

I could squeeze into my daughter's to make it just a little funnier. If you see me though, you'll owe me the Romo one.

I'll have to send you my daughter's blue one. I don't own a Romo jersey. I have a Roy Williams which I am about to retire and a brand new Jason Witten one that I got a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, we just blew this person's blog all to hell discussing pink jerseys. Boy, is this person going to be thrilled?

I meant that you'd have to wear one, but you are right. Sorry, wjbrown3, hit my next one up with some sort of willy nilly conversation.

Look it is what it is ,right now were beating a dead horse, look at it this way they all did it he just got caught, this has been going on for years by all of them and if dude was still with the pats and not the jets nothing would have been said and all of them would still be doing it,lets worry about the real problem it is said that in 2011 we might not have a season, and here we are worrying about some crap thats gonna never go away no matter what,Don"t get me wrong i bleed green and i"m salty about our bowl run with them but hey its the past move on...As much as i hate to say it Jimmie Johnson once said "Even if they knew what we were gonna do if we do it right they still should not be able to stop us" Please comment

Not often Eagles and Cowboy fans agree on anything, but you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Thanks.

I believe that he should be suspened for about 8 games and Belichick himself fined. However i dont see this happening because the Patriots are viewed as the gods to football in the NFL's eyes and because of that they dont want to tarnish any of the Patriots so called prestiege and make the face of the NFL look bad but thats just my opinion.

Cowboyswin08, I'm not putting down Dallas in any way by mentioning Jimmy Johnson and I never read anything on the prescriptions by an assistant coach. They fully deserve their superbowls. I mention Jimmy Johnson because in New England his interviews were played nonstop during spygate. People have alot of respect for Jimmy because of his comments. You can be directed to several websites if you enter Jimmy Johnson illegal taping on a search. I would like to quote from one of the sites.Q: How about the spying thing Jimmy? You're a coach. Does it bother you what Belichick did? JJ: Oh please. I've said it on our show. Eighteen years ago a scout from the K.C. chiefs told me what they did, and he said what you need to do is take your camera and you zoom in the signal caller and that way you can sync it up. The problem is if they're not on the pressbox side, you can't do it from the pressbox. You have to do it from the sideline. That was eighteen years ago. Q: Did you ever steal signals? JJ: Oh in a heartbeat, yeah. Yes I did. Q: Via video Jimmy? Or no? JJ: Oh yeah, I did it with video and so did alot of other teams in the league. Just to make sure you could study it and take your time, because you're going to play the team a second time around. Alot of coaches did it. It was commonplace. The article is very good. I think everybody has in New England has seen the video. Again I'm not bashing Dallas Cowboyswin08. Ninety percent of people outside of New England don't even know that this practice existed. What Jimmy Johnson said about him videotaping opposing teams signals with Dallas and Miami goes a long way with New England fans. He had the guts to admit it. It's too bad the fans can't.

I think a few N.E. fans are realistic and see it for what it is. They have admitted that their team did the same thing that several other teams in the NFL have done. They just got turned it and evidence was found.
