No one seems to be satisfied with the NFL’s current “Win the coin toss, get the football” overtime system. I’ve been against changing it, though, mainly because I haven’t heard any ideas that I’ve liked better. Until today, anyway.

Wow. It will never happen, but it would sure add some fun to OT. People would HATE the coaches if the messed that up.

Way too smart for the NFL.

NOT SOLD ON THE IDEA YET, I THINK WE NEED TO BE LIKE THE NBA AND KEEP PLAYING OT'S UNTIL SOME1 WINS, I DONT LIKE THE TIE.
    • eagles4ever05
neither does McNabb but they wont change it

I agree. I think you play a certain number of minutes of OT until someone wins. If the game is tied and those first OT minutes are up, go to the next round of OT.

i like that...although the game isnt decided on a coin toss because the entire game is played before the OT coin toss...a winner could have been decided...but whoever wins the coin toss that doesnt mean they will definitely score...thats why defense is a huge part of the game too...but this idea is great it will hype head coaches up alot more

I highly doubt it would hype headcoaches up a lot more. It will just piss the fans off even more if they still dont get the ball.

Its a stupid idea. The Nfl should just play it like college. not sudden death so the coin toss does not mean as much. You will still have a chance to score.

The coin toss is elegantly simple and requires only luck to win. Both teams have the same chances to win or lose. Bidding based on a starting position could get cumbersome, with identical choices, second bids, thirds. Who`d want to watch these proceedings for five or ten minutes?

While I'd prefer the NFL go the college route this ain't a bad idea. Personally, I'd favor something more ridiculous--like the ref dealing each team captain a hand of blackjack. It would be like the NHL shootout--first team to lose the hand kicks off. Or while we're at it, let's deal 5 hands of blackjack to each team to decide the game. It's as ridiculous as the XFL scramble, but without the injuries...

I agree with da1prophet, use college overtime rules. Frankly if anyone really wanted the ball that much they would both say 1 yard line and then what do you do? I think if a team has battled that long against each other and the game is tied, let them continue to battle. I say switching to college football rules will be better cause it elimanates the "what if's" or if "If we got the ball first we would've won" Now you both get the ball and your offense and defense has to win the game for you.

    gay idea

Me and Monster agree...must be a full moon

they should have the 2 head coaches wrap their hands with rope, dip them in honey and glass and fight to the death at midfield to determine who gets the ball....it would have a better chance than this idea.

Its not a HORRIBLE idea, but theres NO way the NFL will adopt it. A for effort anyway.
  • that is one of the dumbest ideas ive ever heard the nfl needs to adopt the college rules for overtime its very exciting and both teams get a shot
  • TheSweez
I was watching that dang cable NFL show that Chris Collingsworth is on last season. They debated about the change of OT rules. The statistic they brought up was that throughout all the OT games in the history of the NFL, the team that WON the toss LOST MORE than the team that lost the toss. Kinda odd. Really makes you wanna, I don't know... have a good defense?
  • Zukny1
Don't like the idea, I like the coin toss, I just don' think it should be sudden death anymore. I think each team should have 1possession, and whatever they do with it, is the end result.

what happens if both coaches pick the same yardline....ah yes, then a coin toss
  • FANARCHY
    Great idea.
  • FANARCHY
Regarding the "both teams need to have a shot at the ball" argument: Um, this isn't baseball, where only the team on offense can score. Defenses can score too, and defense can win games. Not getting the ball followed by a three-and-out = good field position, great field position even. So stop whining and start playing defense.

this eliminates kickof/kickoff return which is a very important part of the game and many teams..... all aspects of the game should be on display during overtime.
