Westbrook, Eagles expect to come out of the gate fast

Brian Westbrook is not one to mince words. He doesn't like training camp.

"A lot of players say they like training camp, but I don't like training camp at all," Westbrook said yesterday during Week 2 of the Eagles' Organized Team Acitivity. "I think that we need the work, but I think that training camp is a little bit too long."

While the grueling two-a-days in Bethlehem remain a month away, it's hard to blame Westbrook's trepidation. For the second straight day, area thermometers tickled the 95-degree mark. On the practice field at the NovaCare Complex, even without pads, it felt like triple digits at times.

"It was hot out there," Westbrook said. "It was a great practice and it kind of gauged where you're at as far as conditioning."

Westbrook is coming off one of the greatest seasons ever by an Eagles running back. He carried the ball a career-high 278 times, gaining 1,333 yards on the ground and another 771 through the air. Westbrook broke franchise records in receptions (90) and yards from scrimmage (2,104).

But instead of rewarding Westbrook with a new contract, the Eagles are holding him to the five-year, $25 million deal he signed in 2005. Some feel the team may have brought in his replacement when they traded a fourth-round pick to Miami for Lorenzo Booker.

But Westbrook applauded the move, saying it gives the team another playmaker. After last year's 8-8 finish, something had to change.

"We have to get some momentum from the beginning and get our swagger," Westbrook said. "I think last year we lost our swagger along the way."

THOUGHTS, i got a few want to see what the rest of you bleeding green and non bleeding green think

this guy is a team player. love it

how much is he askin for

it's not what he's askin for jp it's what he's worth to the team. the man deserves far better then what he's bein paid.
yes he sure is a team player squish so much so, the man will do whatever it takes, that alone to me is worth more $$ then he's getting.

and i'll thumb ya up, good answer punk LOL!

he is starting to remind me of tiki barber. westbrook is definately better, i just mean how tiki got better and stronger as he got older. PAY HIM NOW!!!!!!!!!!! we need him for as long he plays the game

i hear that thank you and you are correct we do need him for as long as he plays, i can't see him in any other color.

booker is not westbrooks replacement...westbrook is here to stay and the eagles will pay him when they have to...he deserves the money now but thats business...does less money equal less productiveness? i hope not..

well his replacement doesnt mean hes gonna leave it just means they got a westbrook type player that can form into something great when westbrooks football days are over which will be very very sad

oh yea and I went to training camp last yearand it got to 107 deg. he is right It is hot as hell down there

B-West is my hero

they need to give him a new contract!!! he works his ass off every game!!! how many times have you or friends said during a game "THANK GOD FOR WESTBROOK!!!!" since the eagles aren't committed to winning the big game!!! we need to give our best player a raise!!!!

WESTBROOK IS THE MAN! such a classy guy he needs a contract but isnt making an issue of it now this is the way to go about things..

i work for the eagles offiial website, cindy ck0712 had me join here, i must say i'm really laughing at the person who came in overnight and messed up this thread. getting back to my point here, this is why i've asked the question i've asked. westbrook is not happy and we need that fixed asap. the man has done so much for the team, i'm going to make sure this thread gets to where it has to go, thanks to all who replied and showed love. and to the jacka@@ that messed up my thread and took the thumbs away from people, how'd that work out for you now that you got called out in the backyard?

i would love to be underpaid to the tune of 25 MILLION DOLLARS. i work 10 hours a day 6 days a week for only $18 an hour and i get no offseason. if i told my boss i wanted more money or i might sit out he would laugh at me. he signed the contract took the signing bonus live up to it.

i thumbed you up, although i do disagree but that's the beauty of it chily. i'll make sure brian gets your sentiments ok, and i'll let you know how that works out for ya

ah i see, the cheese steak is your specialty, very good

I love me some #36 and he handles his business with class.I love his honesty as well. hating training camp hasn't hurt his game yet, huh? As far as his contract goes, I feel that players should honor the ones they sign but at the same time be rewarded for performing above and beyond. He singlehandedly carried the team for seasons.

2 seasons...oops

loud and clear lady, loud and clear thank you for the feedback.

good point mom as always!!! they should've put incentives in there!!! the guy is our franchise player!! he's a leader and he's the most feared back in the league!!! even randy moss has been quoted in saying, " we need us a westbrook!!!" he carried our team this year and previous year!!! he's a class act, he plays hurt, he has definately been the most unselfish player the team has ever had!!! even the dreaded t.o. has the utmost respect for him!!! beside for throwing him the ball throw some monetary incentives at him!!!! b-west is a true BALLER!!!

this is why I love the man the best RBs in the NFL and west36 are in the same breath......does everthing for the eagles......gets 20 to 30 touches a game and gets over a 100 yards every game........ has a shit contract.......and is only angry with the heat in philly. Just a class act.Nice!!!

he's right, we did lose our swagger & the man deserves a better contract !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
can i be any MORE clearer, nope don't think so........................

I dunno why they thumbed yah down, because I think B west deserves a better contract also... without him what would our offense be?

Westbrook is to our team what Payton Manning is for the Colts. When he goes, we go. He has been our most productive player over the last few years, and deserves fair market value when it comes to his talent. I understand that the Eagles FO take a hard line and expect their players to "live up" to their end of the bargain and honor their contract. But when a player performs over and beyond expectations, I think we have to recognize that and reward it. Ask ANY Philadelphia Eagles fan, who is more valuable to our team? Asante? or Westbrook? I know it's comparing apples to oranges here, but given how our team has lost Lito (who many consider the same level of talent as Asante) numerous times we were still good on defense. But when Westbrook was out of the mix, we looked completely anemic on offense and had zero potency. That's just FACT. ONE person can make a difference, so lets keep one of our best difference makers happy and healthy. We NEED Westbrook. Period. Pay the man.

all i am saying is that i dont understand how getting paid 5 million dollars for 16 weeks work is underpaid. i think that is part of the problem with professional sports how can a average fan relate to that. he willingly signed a five year 25 million dollar deal now he want more. if he played bad would he give money back? i think he is a great player i just dont think he is underpaid.

He is good, but does he deseve a raise? Depends on how much is he asking for. He makes 4.5 million this year. Not paid like one of the top RB's, but still decent money. I think that the RB postition is a bad position to put alot of money into. Just look around the league, RB's are constantly getting injured and most teams need 2 backs to rotate. Shaun Alexander career is pretty much over after his injuries, Larry Johnson, Steven Jackson, Rudi Johnson, Duece McCallister, Clinton Portis, Cedric Benson, Gore, Ronnie Brown etc were all injured last year. Almost all teams star RB have been injured for a decent amount of time, not to mention other teams use a 2 RB system ie. Dallas, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Giants etc.
Westbrook is a good RB, but with his history and the reasons I stated, maybe I give him a raise, but it wouldn't be much. He makes 4.5 mill this year. That's not a bad chunk of change. You can mess our teams cap up by signing him to a big contract, then he gets a significant injury. So I think the Eagles are doing a good thing by not giving him a new contract. Wait til' his contract expires (2 more years), and if he keeps performing the same and he hasn't been getting alot of injuries, then reward him.

At least he's honest! I can say my kid HATES practice, but loves to play. He should get a raise. He has more then proved his worth to the team.

thanks all for the feedback, i will make sure it goes where it needs to be.

In my opinion and Im sure alot of other people on here would agree with this Westbrook is one of the best if not the best running backs in the league. He is a nightmare to opposing defenses. Therefore, he deserves to be paid as one of the best in the league. Give him a new contract for 6 years for $60million.

u know what if i ever make it to the NFL i want to play in Philly u people are always on here commenting and u really take up for ur eagles, 1 day i would love to be part of that, u guys are true fans

It's obvious we all agree on one thing, KEEP BWEST HAPPY!!!! He derserves it. And Yes EAGLES FANS are the greatest, why? cause we never give up on our team. We can be 1-10 and we will still brag about what we are gonna do the next week. Plus we are the most honest fans alive. If you suck then we will let you know.

West is a solid player that needs to be rewarded.....I just dont like what the Eags are doing to him by letting him carrying the bulk of the load. I know the WRs havent been as productive as Reid wants them but i get kinda scared when i see West slice it up the gut and gets gang tackled by 5 guys on a constant basis. Too bad CBuck cant step his game up and help out a bit on the power game.
