The NHL announced on September 21 that its annual outdoor game, known as the Winter Classic, will take place in Washington D.C. in 2015. As usual, the contest will take place on New Year’s Day and will be broadcast live across North America. The location had been speculated for some time, but it was made official when Ted Leonsis, the majority owner of the Washington Capitals and John Collins, the chief operating officer of the NHL confirmed it. The annual game is typically played in an MLB baseball or NFL football stadium where it can hold upwards of 40,000 fans. The 2014 edition of the game will be held in Ann Arbor, Michigan between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs and it’s expected to attract a world-record crowd of about 100,000 people.
