This past week of hockey featured a man not named Lindy Ruff behind the Buffalo Sabres bench, the Blackhawks staying undefeated in regulation this season, Cam Ward trying his best to recreate Rob Davison's 197 foot goal on Vesa Toskala, and perhaps one of the biggest blown calls in NHL history on Matt Duchene's crazy offside goal.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------After 16 years as head coach of the Buffalo Sabres, Lindy Ruff has been fired. Ruff was the longest tenured coach in the NHL. Under Ruff, the Sabres made it to the Conference Finals four times, but never won the Stanley Cup. They missed the playoffs last season after are 6-11-1 to start this season. Since Ruff was hired in 1997, 170 coaches have been fired from other franchises in the NHL.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------...

Lindy Ruff will be back to work soon

Lindy Ruff might not be unemployed for long. Freshly fired after 15 years behind the Buffalo Sabres' bench (replaced by Ron Rolston of the AHL Rochester Americans), Ruff could be entrenched as head coach of another squad shortly -- if he's interested in taking on a new challenge right away. The general consensus amongst NHL coaches and general managers seems to be that the...

Lindy Ruff Wants To Return To Coaching

from John Vogl of Sabres Edge at the Buffalo News, Ruff saved his most emotional thanks for the fans as he fought tears through a cracking voice. "Last and most importantly is our fans," said Ruff, who spent 26 of his 53 years as part of the Sabres. "The people who have made this place special for myself and my family. "It's a place I call home...

Lindy Ruff Fired By Buffalo Sabres

I have wanted to comment upon the Buffalo Sabres firing of Lindy Ruff this week but have yet to find the time.  Ruff was the longest serving NHL coach.  He had been hired in 1997 and has successfully taken the Buffalo Sabres to the Stanley Cup finals.  He finally fell for the "what have you done for me lately?" mindset that often sees good coaches get fired.  Buffalo...

Classic Video (1980) - Lindy Ruff vs. Billy Smith

One of my favorite Lindy Ruff clips, and a childhood memory of mine when he was a player.  Ruff attacks Islanders goaltender Billy Smith after being highsticked during Game 6 of the 1980 Semifinals.

After 26 Years, Lindy Ruff Is Done With The Buffalo Organization

from John Vogl of the Buffalo News, Lindy Ruff dreamed of holding the Stanley Cup in his adopted town of Buffalo. He pictured himself skating around Memorial Auditorium with the chalice over his head. He envisioned himself clutching the Cup on the bench in First Niagara Center. He held onto the dream for half of his life. Now he has to let it go. Ruff’s run in Blue...

Sabres React To Ruff Dismissal

fromPierre LeBrun of ESPN, On his way out of the Air Canada Centre after a morning skate that was missing a familiar face, Ryan Miller reflected on Day 1 without his longtime coach Lindy Ruff.  "Lindy did a lot for me in my career," the Buffalo Sabres star netminder told ESPN.com Thursday before a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. "He gave me an...

What difference does a coach make?

In the wake of Lindy Ruff being fired, it seems like a good time to talk about one of my pet peeves in the coaching area.  Oh, who am I kidding?  It has nothing to do with Ruff or McLellan or any head coach.  It's all about the "surprising revelation" that Kevin Kurz shared about Antti Niemi and how he brought his Finnish goaltending coach back with him from Finland...

Buffalo fires Ruff; Trotz now longest tenured coach in NHL…

The 6-10-1 Buffalo Sabres have lost four of their last five games, have the second worst power play in the league and have the worst face-off percentage (44.6%) in the NHL. If all that wasn’t enough, they just received word that their coach of 15 years has been fired. Lindy Ruff spent 1,165 games behind the Sabres bench. He was hired on July 21, 1997 and compiled a 571-432-78...

QCS Buffalo Water Cooler: Sabres Fire Ruff

This week’s Water Cooler features QCS writers Ryan Talbot. What’s your initial reaction to the Sabres firing long time head coach Lindy Ruff? The Sabres shocked the NHL on Wednesday after firing Lindy Ruff. (Photo: Kevin Hoffman, USA TODAY Sports) Brandon Hess: Many will argue that this day should have come years ago, but alas Lindy Ruff’s tenure has come to an end.  In the...

GARTH: Rolston Has His Work Cut Out For Him

Coaching changes in pro sports are inevitable. These days, coaches are hired to be fired. Its a cold, hard fact in a high risk/high reward profession. In the end, Lindy Ruff could not find the solutions to the problems that were plaguing the Sabres. He was fired for it. His 15 year body of work is impressive. However, his 2013 coaching record leaves a lot to be desired. The Sabres skate int...

Farewell Old Friend

The Toughest Parts The reaction, as you might expect, has been a cautionary one. Within a half hour of the news, coaches from around the NHL — men who have been Lindy Ruff’s colleague for more than a decade in different capacities — shared with reporters their feelings about Ruff as a person and coach and that they are sure he’ll get another chance somewhere. To a man...

What’s Next In San Jose?

from David Pollak of Working the Corners, ... one-third of the way through the season, San Jose continues to be on a downhill slide after elevating expectations by going 7-0-0 out of the chute. Now at 8-5-3, that’s the kind of bad sequence of events that can lead to everything from major trades to coaching changes to dismissals in the front office if things continue to go...

Video: Torts, Players Talk Nightmare in Montreal

...i hate to say it, but Torts sounded like a man with no answers. Which is the most concerning. ...he needs to figure out why this team isn't scoring on the power play and why they're not standing up for each other and figure it out now. ...for those of you thinking that Torts needs to be fired, ain't happening. It's only 17 games into the season and he just...

Bruins Looking for Successful Florida Swing After Dropping Two Games Last Year (Video)

After seven Bruins missed practice on Tuesday with flu-like symptoms, the team was back at it on Wednesday. Practicing down in Tampa in advance of the team’s Thursday game against the Lightning, the B’s know they have a tough test in front of them after dropping both games on their Florida swing last year. Although the Panthers are struggling right now, the Lightning are boasting...
