There were several new champions crowned Sunday night at WWE’s Payback pay-per-view: * In the opening match at WWE Payback, Curtis Axel defeated Wade Barrett and The Miz in a Triple Threat Match to become the new WWE Intercontinental Champion. The story of the match was that it was Father’s Day and it was a “perfect ending” to Curtis winning the title. They referenced his father quite a bit during the match so that’s the direction they are going. * AJ Lee defeated Kaitlyn in the second match of the night to win the WWE Divas title. Speaking of AJ Lee, she tweeted earlier in the day on Sunday that she wasn’t feeling well. She said: ““Woke up at 6am feeling sicker than I’ve ever been in my life. The irony of this happening today is not lost on me. #MurphysLaw”” * Alberto Del Rio defeated Dolph Ziggler to win the World Heavyweight Championship. The story of the match was that Ziggler had a “head injury” and was confused. This ties into the real-life concussion he suffered several weeks ago at a SmackDown TV taping. As Ziggler was helped to the back by trainers and referees, Alberto Del Rio came back and cut a semi-heel promo saying he deserved the win and had done “everything for them.” It seems odd that WWE took the title off Ziggler so quickly. We hope to have more soon but it appears there is more to this than what we know.
