Ugh. The Caps don't look like a team with high aspirations for the post season, so far. They started out on fire, while I worked my tail off in Las Vegas and couldn't watch. Caps started out with a 4-1 victory over Boston and 6-4 win over Toronto which wasn't as close as it sounds. Tonight, they blew it against the New Jersey Devils and lost in a 3-2 shootout. Some observations:Jose Theodore's playing inspired in net. He's kept the Caps in games and had some unbelievable saves in the 3rd period tonight.Alex Ovechkin leads the league in points, but needs to help this team take the next step.Mike Knuble and Brendan Morrison more than make up for an oft-injured Sergei Fedorov (don't get me wrong, I love the guy and will never forget his $4M goal to keep the Caps in the playoffs last April, but the Caps needed a net crasher) and Viktor Kozlov. Knuble brings that crease crashing forward the Caps have desperately needed. Morrison plays like a guy with a 1-year...

Suddenly, I'm Seriously Missing Sergei Fedorov
A little bit of sandpaper out on the ice, I think, might have helped the zone clearing cause during those 90-some-odd seconds that seemed like 90 minutes when five Capitals' skaters were powerless in the third period, clinging to a one-goal lead, to clear the puck from their end against New Jersey Monday night. The shift that ended up -- and didn't you just know it was coming...
Caps Party: More Fans, More Flags, More Fun
For the second year running, the Washington Capitals hosted their annual Season Ticket Holder "Meet the Caps" party at Six Flags America. Once again, the team provided fans with a night of fun for all ages. The timing of the event was impeccable -- a perfect Autumn evening, perhaps our last before a spate of rain and cold arriving tomorrow. The crowd was large and enthusiastic...
Heartache in Hockeytown, and the Return of a Great Quebecois Rivalry?
It was a bittersweet Saturday night: the Capitals offered a much-improved effort at the Joe, getting superb goaltending from JT and competing for pucks in a much more impressive fashion, but ultimately were undone by costly and senseless penalties. They took five, the more disciplined Wings took just three, and Detroit converted the differential into a 3-2, hard-fought triumph.The...

Shoebox Memories: Bengt Gustafsson
Nicklas Backstrom may be setting up Alexander Ovechkin these days in Washington, but the young Swede reminds some of another great Swedish pivot who once played in Washington 25 years ago - Bengt-Ake Gustafsson.
Caps again blow lead in third
The biggest problem for the Washington Capitals isn't that they have returned to their dressing room smarting from a loss in four straight contests. But the fact the Caps left that same room following the second intermission with the lead in three of these four games is. David Clarkson tied the game in the third period, and then Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner scored in a...

RED ALERT: Caps in a funk - Afternoon Edition
Three things are clearly overriding problems of this 4 game skid. First, the Capitals are not converting the power play like they did last season. During the 4 game losing streak are a dismal 3-22 (.136) on the power play. Last year the Caps were 2nd overall in the NHL, over 25% conversion on the PP.
New Jersey Devils (2-2-0) at Washington Capitals (2-2-1), 7 p.m.
After losing their first two games of the 2009-10 campaign, the New Jersey Devils shoot for a third straight win tonight against Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.
Todd Bertuzzi's size pays off against Capitals
Consider the Capitals' top line of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin. Ovechkin is 6-foot-2, 233 pounds, Backstrom 6-1, 210, and Semin 6-2, 208.
Early Season MVP
We are now a few games into the NHL season and it is possible to look at the results and try to determine very early leaders for the NHL Awards. At this point in the year, I think the leading MVP candidate is Alexander Ovechkin. Ovechkin is tied for the NHL lead with 10 points. His five goals are second in the league. His +5 +/- rating is top among forwards...

Washington Captials Lose Lead Late Again In 3-2 Loss To New Jersey
"One bad shift in the third period" was how Washington Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau described his team's effort in a 3-2 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils, who were completing a three-game road trip Monday night at a sold-out Verizon Center...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...
