Bill James taught us about comparables (comps) and what they can tell us about specific prospects. If a #4 overall pick begins to sputter and make funny noises, Jason Bonsignore might be a comp. If the kid your team drafted in the middle of the first round starts to make ridiculous plays with the puck and make veterans miss while still a teenager, then names like Hossa, Middleton and others come to the fore.It should be mentioned that not all comps go on to have long and productive careers. When we talk about using comparables and cite NHL players we are really talking about "best case scenario" for these players using logic and good sense. There have always been surface things that tie Colin McDonald to Fernando Pisani:Both were drafted out of tier 2 junior (AJHL and EJHL).Both played 4 full years for Providence (NCAA).Both had extended AHL careers (172-164 Pisani so far). Both have good size for the NHL.Both have good shots. Both spent periods of time being "long shot...

Oilers at Avalanche, G17, 09-10

In Quebec province the men go about their business in about the same way as guys do in this part of the country. Always time for a beer or a glance at a pretty girl, always time to talk some Canadian football (believe it or not, Quebec is the new heartland of Canadian football) and hockey holds a special place.I've never really been able to get behind any kind of animosity toward...

Reddox, Potulny Recalled

Oilers website has just posted the news: Liam Reddox and Ryan Potulny are in the show again.Edmonton has been playing shorthanded for several reasons in the last few weeks. Injury, flu and coach Quinn's reluctance to use Steve MacIntyre meant a real lack of depth up front. Reddox is developing into a useful 2-way player at the AHL level and has shown some things in the big leagues...

The Edmonton Oilers begin a long road trip with a stop in Denver to play the NHL's best home team, the Colorado Avalanche.

Similar Game, Different Results - Rangers@Oilers Post Game Thoughts…

Continuing where they left off, the Rangers once again played a solid game (I felt they were solid against the ‘nucks as well) against the Oilers in what seemed like an absolutely dead Edmonton building. The Rangers ran roughsod over the Oilers winning a 4-2 game that really wasn’t that close. The goaltending matchup, to me, was lopsided in favor of the Bulin wall,...

Undisciplined Oilers drop 3rd straight

The ailing Edmonton Oilers dug their own hole Thursday night with a parade to the penalty box, giving the New York Rangers the chance they needed to put the brakes on a four-game losing skid on the road.

Rangers Spank The Flu Plagued Oilers, And Higgins Is Just Warming Up!

The Rangers faced the Edmonton Oilers tonight what was for the most part a very dominating performance by the blue shirts. For the large majority of the game the Rangers ran over the Oilers, which is a banged up team early in the season...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...

Avalanche vs Oilers - Game Preview

The Oilers are on a 3-game losing streak and I always say that the longer a streak goes, the more likely it is to end. Unless you're Carolina, of course. But I don't expect Edmonton's streak to end tonight. I'm feeling good. I believe the Avs are feeling good. And I believe they'll still be feeling it from their come-from-behind victory against the Blackhawks...

Edmonton Oilers (7-8-1) at Colorado Avalanche (12-3-2), 8 p.m.

The Avalanche didn't give their fans much to cheer about on home ice last year, but there is plenty of early-season buzz at the Pepsi Center now.
