Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox aren't interested in bringing Orlando Cabrera back to Boston, though they did inquire about the shortstop. McAdam's sources say the Red Sox would have to give up too much "in terms of his remaining salary and prospects." Instead, they're content to play Nick Green and Julio Lugo until Jed Lowrie returns. One team apparently determined that Cabrera, a two-time Gold Glover, is the worst defensive shortstop in the American League. The Red Sox inquired on "a number of other veteran shortstops," including Jack Wilson, but they decided the asking price was too high. Even if Lowrie struggles once he returns, they'll have time to deal before the July 31st trade deadline.

A's have double vision in win over Baltimore
Orlando Cabrera hits a two-run double in the fourth inning of the A's victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night. Cabrera had two doubles for the A's, who have outscored opponents 35-8 during their five-game winning streak.

Lester Pitches a 2-Hitter for Rex Sox Win
Boston Red Sox; Jon Lester has another amazing start!!! Lester was awesome and pitched like Beckett the other night, LIGHTS OUT!! Last night it was Texas at Fenway and Lester came out and took out the Rangers, hittless for 7 innings. I thought he was going to get a no-hitter once the 6th inning came and went and Lester just was painting the corners and striking people out left...
Slumping Ortiz's vision is fine, gets eye drops
David Ortiz's vision has checked out very well as the Boston Red Sox try to help him out of his season-long slump.
The designated hitter received drops for dry eyes Monday, team spokesperson Pam Ganley said. Ortiz has two homers and 22 RBIs with a .197 batting average in 51 games. He has been dropped from the third to the sixth spot in the lineup, but has hit better recently...
Dice-K Doesn’t Have It
Daisuke Matsuzaka struggled once again yesterday, but in a somewhat different manner as the Sox fell to the Rangers, 6-3 at Fenway Park. Matsuzaka walked none, 70% of his pitches were strikes, and he struck out 8 in 5 2/3 innings.
Eric Avidon observes that Matsuzaka is often to efficient pitching what Britney Spears is to good parenting. Efficient [...]Post from: Boston Sports Media Watch
The passion of the Ortiz
Three David Ortiz quotes from the ESPN article teased on the front page yesterday as “Big Papi says struggles at plate eating him up” killed me:
“My mind is spinning with all of this [stuff]. It’s hard to sleep. This is hard. I’ve never been through something like this.”
“People keep writing and saying all this [stuff]. They say I can’t hit no more. That I’m done...
Pounding headache
The unfamiliar stat line Daisuke Matsuzaka produced yesterday begged for an explanation, and Matsuzaka settled on his by early evening. In his fourth start since leaving the disabled list, Matsuzaka said repeatedly that he lacked merihari, the Japanese word for contrast or variety.
TEX 6, BOS 3: Rebound
Dominate pitching at Fenway Park could only last so long. Daisuke Matsuzaka took the hill one game after Jon Lester's near perfect game.
Dice-K got rocked for five runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings pitched with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Nelson Cruz and David Murphy each collected three hits apiece. Cruz also hit his 17th homer of the season in the seventh off of Hideki...
Opinions vary on cure for a slump
Put on a Red Sox hat, and, like in the New Era commercial, you might pass for David Ortiz on the street or in the airport. Or, for that matter, this season, at the plate.
Good Thing Beckett & Lester Have Picked It Up
Daisuke Matsuzaka turned in another mediocre-to-lousy performance on Sunday, and the Texas Rangers took advantage, winning 6-3 and taking the series at Fenway from the Red Sox.Matsuzaka gave Texas four runs in the first three innings, including a home run to the red-hot Michael Young. He walked none but allowed ten hits, and the league is hitting an astounding .349 against him in...
Disappointed in Youuuuk
I absolutely love the intensity of Kevin Youkilis. The fact that he cares so much about the every swing of the bat shows great commitment to the game of baseball. What a great guy to have on the team. That being said, I’ve been a little disappointed in Youk lately. On Wednesday Night against the Tigers, Josh Anderson accidently stepped on Kevin Youkilis’s ankle...
A's Don't Have To Make Trades
The A's are in last place, 7.5 games behind the Rangers and they've already been involved in their share of trade rumors, but as Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle reports, they don't have to shed payroll. Now riding a six-game win streak, the A's can hold onto players like Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera if they continue to win.The A's would receive two draft picks...
