The suddenly goal-challenged Detroit Red Wings suffered another blow Saturday night when forward Jason Williams fractured his fibula in a 5-1 loss to Toronto—an injury that could keep him out of action for two months.
Williams joins star forward Johan Franzen, who scored 34 goals last season, and center Valtteri Filppula on the injury list and adds to the goal-scoring void created by the departures of Marian Hossa (40), Jiri Hudler (23) and Mikael Samuelsson (19). Franzen has a torn ACL and will be out until February; Filppula might not return until late December because of a broken wrist.
Williams crashed hard into the boards in the second period and had to be helped to the dressing room.
