If you were putting money on it, you'd have to put your dough on the Rangers not re-signing Marlon Byrd. The reality is that this club has depth in the outfield and Byrd cost $3 million this season. (Not to mention this club's financial situation.) He's an unrestricted free agent and wants a multi-year deal, as most free agents who will be 32 at the end of the season would.
What would it take to keep him? Tough to say. Would he cost $5 million per season on a two-year deal? Would he be willing to sign for his same salary if he got a guaranteed three-year deal? Maybe. The bottom line: It will cost the Rangers more money and they'll have to give him some security too.
There's no question Byrd wants to stay.
"I've seen what's been built up in this organization for three years," Byrd said. "We have a winning team, and in 2010 and 2011 we'll keep restocking. I love what the front offie is doing with JD, Thad and Nolan and the coaching st...

Borbon helps lead grow
The Angels scored a run on a sacrifice fly that turned into an inning-ending double play in the sixth, but the Rangers scored five times in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-1 lead.
The first run came courtesy of the first big-league hit of Julio Borbon, who was pinch-hitting for Nelson Cruz (lower back stiffness). Hank Blalock scored on a wild pitch as Jarrod Saltalamacchia...

I second Evan Grant's defense of Kevin Millwood
ESPN.com's Rob Neyer says Kevin Millwood isn't deserving of an All-Star bid, though he'll probably get one. Neyer uses fan graphs to illustrate that Millwood has left a large number of baserunners stranded and benefitted from defense. Basically, Millwood is pitching like he did in 2007 in most categories and getting lucky.
First, let me direct you to Evan Grant's...
Who should be the Rangers' closer right now?
I have argued that if Frank Francisco is healthy that he should be the closer for this team. He was dominant before the shoulder injury sidelined him and deserves a chance to get his job back.
But right now, C.J. Wilson should be this team's closer. Maybe you have Wilson do it until the All-Star break or shortly thereafter until you're confident that Francisco is OK. Francisco...
Recapping last night in Iowa
Josh Hamilton went 0-for-4 against Iowa on Thursday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Oklahoma City, but afterward said that his timing is there even if the results aren't. He will play at Principal Park again tonight, starting in center field. He could be back with the Rangers on Saturday, though he said he will stay on assignment as long as the Rangers tell him to stay...
Hamilton now 0-for-3
Josh Hamilton sent a flyball to the warning track in left field in the fifth inning, drawing ooohs from the Principal Park crowd, but it was snared by Bobby Scales just shy of the wall. Hamilton is now 0-for-3 and 1-for-10 so far in his rehab stint.

Angels shake off early slump
After going 17-9 in June, the Angels led the Texas Rangers by one game in the American League West entering Friday's game.
After three months of heartache, injuries and early missteps, the Angels have rallied enough to reach first place as the season's halfway mark approaches.
Rangers whip Rays, 12-4
Andruw Jones homered and drove in four runs, Michael Young added a three-run double and the Texas Rangers roughed up David Price to win their fourth in a row, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 12-4 Saturday night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
