Football. Houston, Nogueira Share Progress Energy Performer Of The Week Honors

Ryan Houston rushed for 164 yards in Carolina's 19-6 win over Duke and Casey Nogueira earned MVP honors as the Tar Heels won the ACC soccer title for the fifth year in a row to share Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for November 2-8, 2009.

Houston's role on offense expands for Tar Heels

For much of his career at UNC, running back Ryan Houston’s role was specialized. When the Tar Heels faced short-yardage situations, Houston was brought in with one clear objective. “Just get yards,” Houston said. This week, with the junior ascending into the starting role after the loss of featured back Shaun Draughn, Houston’s assignment will become much more complex.

Ryan Houston, Casey Barth lead Heels to win

It was fitting two players from North Carolina's defense got the Victory Bell first. Defensive end E.J. Wilson and cornerback Charlie Brown hopped on the rickety, spray-painted wagon for a celebratory ride after the Tar Heels rode their defense, and running back Ryan Houston, to a 19-6 win over the Blue Devils on Saturday at Kenan Stadium.

Houston helps Heels move forward

The most recent time North Carolina's Ryan Houston carried the ball 37 times in a game, he was 30 pounds lighter and in high school. But in Saturday's win over Duke, Houston was forced to carry the load for the Tar Heels when starter Shaun Draughn was lost on the first play of the game. Houston finished with a career-high 164 yards and carried the ball more times than any UNC player since 1990.

Introducing North Carolina sophomore Robert Quinn

A pass-rushing force off the edge, North Carolina DE Robert Quinn ranks among the nation's top 10 in sacks (10) and tackles for loss (15.5). And the sophomore's will matches his play—he has rebounded from 2007 surgery that removed a benign brain tumor. Quinn spoke with Sporting News' Dave Curtis on Monday about his play, his past, and a prediction for next spring.

North Carolina defeats Duke 19-6

Ryan Houston ran for a career-high 164 yards and Jheranie Boyd scored the clinching touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to help North Carolina beat Duke 19-6 on Saturday. Charles Brown also came up with a key interception late in the third quarter as part of a dominating defensive performance for the Tar Heels, who shut down Thad Lewis and the prolific passing attack that...

UNC's defense locks down victory over Duke

Earlier in the week, Duke coach David Cutcliffe called North Carolina's defense the best in the league. Saturday against the Blue Devils, the Tar Heels lived up to his expectations. UNC turned in a dominating defensive performance, shutting down the top passing attack in the ACC, and then let running back Ryan Houston carry the offensive load with a career-high 164 yards in a 19...

Robert Quinn named ACC defensive lineman of the week

UNC sophomore defensive end Robert Quinn found his way into the Blue Devil backfield for three sacks, another 1.5 tackles for loss, and six quarterback hurries in the Tar Heels’ 19-6 win over Duke. Quinn had seven total tackles, a forced fumble and a fourth-down pass breakup to lead the UNC defense in limiting Duke’s potent passing attack to 113 yards. Quinn is ranked fifth nationally...

QB Mike Paulus Commits To North Carolina

from FoxSports.com   The North Carolina football program has picked up a huge commitment in quarterback Mike Paulus, who told Inside Carolina on Friday afternoon that he has decided to become a Tar Heel. Paulus, who attends Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, N.Y., said he chose North Carolina over USC...

UNC defense rings up win over Duke

Thad Lewis and the Duke offense, the irresistible force, crashed headlong into Robert Quinn and the North Carolina defense, the immovable object. Chalk one up for the immovable object. Backup tailback Ryan Houston rushed for a career-high 164 yards and Quinn had three sacks to lead North Carolina to a 19-6 victory over Duke in the annual Victory Bell game Saturday afternoon at Kenan Stadium.

Extra Points: A Smoldering Rivalry Rekindled

All in all, it was quite a lot of fun if you enjoy college football--especially if you pull for the Tar Heels and revel in outstanding defense and the suspense of watching an offense scrape and claw to find something that's working and sticking with it, a la Ryan Houston in a performance that Mike Voight himself would have been proud of.

Points After: North Carolina defeats Duke 19-6

The Victory Bell will stay in Chapel Hill, the same place it's been since 2004. The same place it's been 19 of the last 20 years. The offenses disappointed in this football game on cool November Saturday but North Carolina's defense again proved it's the most stout "D" in the ACC, and still one of the better ones in the nation. For Carolina, the defense was awesome. Robert Quinn...

UNC basketball is reloaded and ready

The buzz around the Dean Smith Center is all about the talented stable of freshmen recruited to win and win now. But make no mistake: This is Deon Thompson's North Carolina team; these are Marcus Ginyard's Tar Heels. A season after winning a national championship then saying goodbye to five of its top seven scorers, North Carolina opens the college basketball season at home tonight...

Young, talented Tar Heels look to veterans for leadership

Even amid the excitement of the season’s first game and the centennial celebration it tipped off, Marcus Ginyard refused to crack a smile. That is, until he reached the sideline after being taken out moments later. “I was just trying to be a tough guy for a little bit,” he said afterward. More likely, the fifth-year senior was trying to send a message to the rest of the young...

UNC begins bid for third straight Final Four

Four-time All-American Tyler Hansbrough is gone, as are Ty Lawson, last season's ACC Player of the Year, and Wayne Ellington, the Final Four Most Outstanding Player last spring. And yet, North Carolina forwards Deon Thompson and Ed Davis can't help thinking the party's not over for this follow-up season to the Tar Heels' national basketball championship. They admit the subject has...
