Last time two Edmonton faced the Rangers, the Rangers lost in a shootout. Last time, they fired 42 shots on net and scored on only 2 – on a backup goaltender. Ah, the Tom Renney era… Well, tomorrow, the Rangers meet Tom Renney again, and while not many current players were there for a lot of his reign (Henrik Lundqvist and Michal Rozsival were the only ones there from his first full season in 2005-06), it should be an emotional night for him. Imagine if the game were at Madison Square Garden? While I rip on Renney a lot here, I do think he was a very good coach, and I’m sure he will be sometime soon. There are a few coaches who will “always be a Ranger,” no matter where they wind up coaching or working. Mike Keenan, though he only had 1 season, is one of them. Renney is another. No coach could have done what he did after the lockout. He took a team destined to fail -at least according to the experts – and brought them into the playoffs, one point away from winning the division. He got 123 points out of Jaromir Jagr – a man who would have refused to return to the NHL if he wasn’t playing for Renney in New York, he once said. He turned a team of veterans – Rucchin, Jagr, Straka, Rucinsky, Kasparaitis, Nylander – and young no-names – Jay Ward, Ortmeyer, Dom Moore, Hollweg, Orr, Prucha, Betts – into a contender. I still say that if not for the Olympics, the Rangers could have gone far that year. Jagr and Lundqvist came back injured – Jagr with hip and groin problems, Hank with headaches from grinding his teeth. And then there was Sandis Ozolinsh, who seemed like a good trade Continue reading Tom Renney…

The Helper Helps Himself

Prospect Park Player of the Week Ryan BourqueAt first glance when we heard that the New York Rangers used their 2009 3rd round pick on Ryan Bourque we really liked the idea. Bourque was one of the top young playmakers in the United States Development Program and there was really only one reason why Bourque fell to the 3rd round; his size.If Bourque was 6'1 210 then no way do the...

Bravo for the Irony

It is ironic that on the night before the Rangers faceoff against the Edmonton Oilers with their new "associate" coach Tom Renney that 2 undrafted Ranger prospects went against each other. Like Tom Renney as the Ranger's coach or not; his contribution to the Rangers will pay dividends longer than people will ever realize. It was during the NHL lockout that Tom Renney...

Rangers Byers suspended

New York Rangers forward Dane Byers has been suspended for one game and coach John Tortorella has been fined for an incident in the third period of Tuesday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. Byers was given an instigator penalty with 1:10 left in the third period of the Rangers’ 4-1 loss. Pursuant to NHL Rule 47.22, [...]

Video: Rangers outnumber Canucks 10-7 in scrum; Avery fun

Terrifically odd scene last night in the third period of the Vancouver Canucks' 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers: Marian Gaborik(notes) gives Ryan Kesler(notes) the weakest slash to the leg in recent memory, sparking a fight-less melee during a line change that actually had 10 players on the ice for New York. Once that situation was defused -- and it did look like it was going...

Been Busy…

I apologize for not writing more about our beloved Rangers, but between working very long days, going to a wedding yesterday, being hungover today, and running back and forth between the bank and the GMC dealership, I haven’t had any free time to watch hockey, much less write about it. Okay, that’s being dramatic. I did miss all of the game against Minnesota, but I caught...

Good Stuff Tonight...

I try not to be one of "those fans" - you know, the type who sulks and glooms and says the team is horrible after a loss, but they're the first one to chant "We Want the Cup" after a convincing win. However, tonight was a good game. The difference between Edmonton and Vancouver, between 1,160 kilometers or 721 miles (thank you, Google Maps), was the offense...

Vancouver winter wonderland

While the Rangers were in Vancouver, there was lots of talk about the Olympics—including that bit about fans should get H1NI flu shots before they go, and that the Canucks will be away from their home rink for 40 days—and this scenario kind of reared its head in my imaginative mind: Chris Drury makes the U.S. [...]

Kotalik helps Rangers beat Oilers, ex-coach Renney

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -Ales Kotalik had a goal and two assists, and the New York Rangers halted a four-game, road-losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.

NHL suspends Rangers' Byers, fines Tortorella

The National Hockey League suspended New York Rangers rookie forward Dane Byers one game for his role in a fight during the third period of Tuesday's loss at Vancouver.

Rangers' Del Zotto lauded for hot start

VANCOUVER -- Michael Del Zotto is 19 years old and according to Rangers head coach John Tortorella, even acts his age at times. Just not on the ice. "No, I'm not going into details, but it's in a good way," Tortorella said, laughing, when informe...

Jan Levine: Gane 15 - The Gabby and Hank show + solid D beat Boston, Heading West

So pretty much, it's no Gaborik we lose, with Gaborik we win. The Rangers played a tight to the vest game against Boston, largely due to the style utilized by the Bruins, and came away with a hard fought 1-0 win Sunday. The team also saw the return from injury of Chris Higgins and Sean Avery, to give them their most complete lineup of late, all of which was needed to edge...

Rangers' Prospal earns 'A' grade from Torts

VANCOUVER -- After going through the first month and 15 games of the season with Ryan Callahan as the team's only alternate captain, the Rangers awarded an "A" to Vinny Prospal before last night's match here against the Canucks. "It wasn't just my ...

Morning Papers Take: Another shot of Jags?

Is Jaromir Jagr actually going to return to the NHL?

A Positive Note

With the New York Rangers getting ready to travel to Western Canada this week, it’ll be nice for them to do so on a positive note as the team came up with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Boston Bruins yesterday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist ruled the afternoon as he made 29 stops, many of them critical in the third period as many...
