Some of my haziest Pirate memories of the past six or seven years all involve late-summer trips to the West Coast. For whatever reason, I feel like the Padres have headed out to San Diego and often San Francisco or LA in August of just about every season, where they go to play meaningless baseball games that might as well not even happen for us East Coasters. This year is quite different; the Pirates are heading out west with a one-game lead in the NL Central, and whether they're in first place or third place when they return home is almost entirely up to them.  Tonight, Francisco Liriano looks to play "stopper" again. In his last start, the Pirates were fresh off of their sweep at the hands of the Rockies and the Starling Marte gaffe. Liriano responded with one of the most brilliantly pitched games of his career -- a 94-pitch complete game that was one out away from being a shutout. Since July 1st, Liriano has made eight starts. Six of them have had game scores of...

Padres 1B loses track of bag, commits error

Your browser does not support iframes. San Diego Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso was charged with an error on a routine grounder when he somehow lost track of the bag at first during Sunday's game at Petco Park. It happened in the second inning as New York Mets batter Juan Lagares hit a chopper to the left side of the infield that was tracked down by pitcher Eric Stults...

Will Venable is doing Will Venable things

Who is Will Venable? We know about his hairline. We know he went to Princeton. We know about his dad, former major leaguer Max Venable. We’ve seen Will’s highlights. We’ve suffered through his lowlights. But really, what kind of player is he? 2009: .256/.323/.440 with 12 home runs and a 108 wRC+ in 324 PA’s 2010: .245/.324/.408 with 13 home runs and a 101 wRC+ in 445 PA’s...

Rumors: Padres place Chase Headley on waivers

The San Diego Padres have placed third baseman Chase Headley on waivers, according to CBS' Jon Heyman. Placing players on waivers is standard procedure and deals don't often happen, but this may be different. The Padres are 16.5 games out of first place in the NL West and Headley won't negotiate a deal during the season. Headley told this to Corey Brock of MLB.com...

Padres Recall Boxberger; Designate O’Sullivan

The Sean O’Sullivan experiment may be over as the Padres announced Monday afternoon that the club has decided to designate the 25-year old right hander for assignment. O’Sullivan’s departure from the roster was corresponded with the recall of RHP Brad Boxberger; with O’Sullivan being DFA’d, the Padres now have only 39 active members on their official 40-man roster. O...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-18-13

Led by a 4 RBI night from Jose Urena, the AZL Padres beat the AZL Reds 7-4. The Missions and the TinCaps won due to excellent starts from Eddie Bonine and Zach Eflin, respectively. The T-Pads lost a close game by 1, but every member of their starting lineup had at least 1 hit. Hitting Prospect of the Day: Jose Urena Pitching Prospect of the Day: Zach Eflin   Tucson Padres 4, Sacramento...

Daily Friar 8.18.13

The Padres’ bats finally woke up and scored some runs. What might be even crazier is that Edinson Volquez only gave up two runs (and just two walks!) and the bullpen went four innings of no hit ball as well. Definitely a well played game on both ends as Nick Hundley and Jedd Gyorko had home runs and Will Venable put up a 4 for 5 night. The rubber match is this afternoon as Eric...

Liriano Dominates, Alvarez Scores Himself Twice in 3-1 Pirates Win

Francisco Liriano stopped a longer losing skid by flummoxing the San Diego Padres. (Photo Credit: David Hague) SAN DIEGO — Francisco Liriano sliced up the San Diego Padres for a season-high 12 strikeouts over seven shutout innings to pave the Pirates’ way to a 3-1 road victory. Pedro Alvarez drove in all three Pittsburgh runs, two with the help of San Diego’s right-field error...

Liriano carves up Padres in Pirates' 3-1 win

Francisco Liriano took another step toward proving that his dismantling at Coors Field two weeks ago was a fluke. He carved up the San Diego Padres with a devastating slider forcing swing after swing at nothing but air in the Pirates' 3-1 victory Monday night at Petco Park. The Pirates maintained their one-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central after the Cardinals...

While You Were Drinking: Game 123 (SD vs NYM)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. Saturday’s game wasn’t looking too good for Padres fans. Not only was Edinson Volquez starting, but Chase Headley was getting a day off. Logan Forsythe started at third base for Headley. New dad Nick Hundley was activated from the...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-19-13

Half the farm had the day off, but the teams that did play all had bright spots. The T-Pads had an all around dominating game while the Emeralds won a close 1 run game. Even though the TinCaps lost 12-5, their 1st baseman, Diego Goris, had a home run and 3 RBI. Hitting Prospect of the Day: Diego Goris Pitching Prospect of the Day: Burch Smith   Tucson Padres 13, Sacramento River...

Padres 4, Mets 3

Will Venable hit a leadoff homer in the ninth inning to give the San Diego Padres a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday. Venable sent a 1-2 pitch from Pedro Feliciano (0-2) just inside the right-field foul pole for his team-high 17th home run, increasing his career high. Venable, who also drove in a run in the fifth, extended his career-best hitting streak to 15 games,...

Venable hits walk-off HR, Padres beat Mets 4-3

This season has afforded the Padres few positives. Sunday's 4-3 walk-off victory over the Mets featured at least a couple even if they represented small triumphs amid a larger grimmer picture. For starters New York ace Matt Harvey was done after just 86 pitches for a team mindful of its 24-year-old prodigy's accumulating workload. The Padres were not beaten by Harvey against...

Pirates 3, Padres 1

You might have slept through it, but if you did, you missed a historic performance by Francisco Liriano, who once again came up with an incredible effort to halt a mini skid. Liriano was more dominant than he’s been all season – which is saying quite a bit – and he ended up with more K’s than any Bucco starter since 2004 (Oliver Perez). 2004!! For perspective, opposing starters...
