Aaron Hernandez hasn’t been the sole root of the Patriots’ headache this offseason. Cornerback Alfonzo Dennard who is still with the team made a surprise appearance at Lancaster County District Court in Lincoln Neb. yesterday morning for his alleged probation violation. He wasn’t due in court until next Wednesday though it’s possible he was granted an earlier appearance because Patriots veterans report today for training camp. The appearance was even surprising to spokespersons in the probation and court clerk’s office whose records didn’t note Dennard’s arrival until late yesterday afternoon. The County Attorney argued Dennard violated the terms of his probation by getting arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence refusing a chemical test and straddling the lane lines. Dennard is on probation for two years because he was found guilty in February of assaulting a police officer. Both instances occurred in Lincoln Neb. Yesterday a judge ordered Dennard back to court Aug. 27 at 8:30 a.m. for his probation revocation hearing. The two sides will present their cases to the judge who will determine if the arrest was a violation of Dennard’s terms. If it’s determined Dennard violated his probation the judge could sentence him to jail or tighten his probation terms. Dennard’s next court appearance for the DUI charge is Aug. 12. Yesterday’s court appearance didn’t change the probation revocation timetable too much. If Dennard arrived as scheduled next Wednesday he was still expected to get his hearing at the end of August or perhaps the beginning of September. It’s unclear if Hernandez’ situation will cause the Patriots to shorten the leash on Dennard though the team obviously hasn’t found enough evidence against him to make a swift roster decision just yet. That’s why the next key date could be Aug. 27 when a judge holds Dennard’s legal fate in his hands. Bill Belichick declined to discuss the ongoing legal matter yesterday. “I can’t comment on that” the Pats coach said.
