Venezuelan native Henderson Alvarez uses a translator for his postgame interviews but this question he understood. Asked whether the tight right hamstring that forced him out of Monday's game after six innings resulted from an earlier home run trot Alvarez chuckled in denial. Despite the premature exit Alvarez had what manager Mike Redmond termed "a heck of a day." Alvarez's first career homer a second-inning three-run shot eclipsed a two-run deficit and proved the difference in a 4-3 Labor Day win at Wrigley Field. Winners of back-to-back games for the first time since Aug. 18-19 the Marlins had lost six consecutive one-run contests – all since Aug. 23. The two teams combined for all seven runs and nine of 17 hits during the first two innings of the game before going scoreless over the final seven. "We're right there where we usually are in a one-run game" said Redmond whose club improved to 19-29 in those contests. "We're used to playing those. It's nice to get on the other side of one." Alvarez after a rocky three-run first during which he gave up singles to each of the first four Cubs' batters tossed five scoreless innings on three hits. At 79 pitches he came out for the seventh but did not start the inning once the hamstring started barking.
