Andre Drummond's destination remains an uplifting mystery. Sugar-plum visions of an NBA championship perhaps a 2016 Olympic gold medal resonate with the Detroit Pistons center. The new coaching regime's challenge as the 20-year-old enters his second season is how to increase Drummond's offensive skill set while tempering his inclination to use it prematurely. It's a touch-and-feel balance not unlike his career to date. Drummond wasn't conditioned to play big minutes early last season notwithstanding the belated move into the starting lineup and back injury which also hampered his rookie year. He learned about NBA-level conditioning during a forgettable 29-win season. Drummond acknowledged he "wasn't in the best condition throughout the year" as a rookie so he shed 15 pounds this summer and weighed in at 284 here with less than 5 percent body fat. That allows this year's lessons to focus more extensively on skills development particularly the offensive end where Drummond's dunking and rebounding already make him productive and the ability to finish 3-10 feet from the basket would make him the premier center in the league. The Pistons want that to happen. So Drummond received the ball in low-post position more frequently in scrimmages during the first week of training camp than at any point last season. That will continue because it's part of a potential superstar's charted development. "I'm getting the ball all over the floor now so it's up to me now to be able to create for myself and for my teammates" Drummond said. "I think that's a big responsibility that they gave me and I'm really excited just to learn a new form of the game in a whole new light." What is instructive and what is implemented may be two different things in the immediate future.
