Oakland’s own Andre Ward reportedly had surgery Friday on his injured right shoulder, which forced the super middleweight champ to cancel an upcoming title defense.
“My surgery went very well and I am definitely pleased with the outcome,” Ward said. “I had a fantastic team of surgeons overseeing everything on Friday morning and they did a great job of repairing the injury. I am confident that I will return to the ring even better than I was prior to the injury.”
Ward (26-0) injured the shoulder while training for his Jan. 26 bout against Kelly Pavlik (40-2). Initially, the fight was expected to be postponed to March 2 but was canceled altogether when it was determined Ward needed surgery.
Ward will soon begin rehabbing the surgically repaired joint. Although there is no official timetable for his recovery, Ward is expected to be out for at least four-to-six months.
