Fans have often clamored for referees to get new glasses after making what they believe to be a bad call. But how about a fan going to the extent of actually breaking a referee's glasses?Such an incident recently took place in Omaha, Neb. when Joseph Stephans, 64, reportedly became so upset with an official during a 7th grade basketball game that Stephans walked up to the official, ripped the $300 pair of spectacles off the official's face, and then proceeded to crush them in his had. This is what referee Carlos Bradford allegedly claimed happened on the Feb. 3 game between St. Margaret Mary and St. Mary of Bellevue.Bradford, 54, said he didn't hear the fan at all during the game, the second of three he was officiating that day at St. Margaret Mary.He said the Bellevue man approached him as he was walking off the gym floor and greeted him with two words: “You suck.”The fan grabbed the eyeglasses, and the two briefly fought — Bradford said punches were exchanged — before parents separated them.“I just started defending myself,” Bradford said, “and it was on.”Neither man was seriously hurt as neither seeked medical treatment. Police were eventually called to the scene and a fan helped Bradford tape his glasses back together so that he could officiate his third and final game of the day. Now, that is a dedicated referee. As for Stephans, he was cited on suspicion of misdemeanor assault and destruction of property. Via Omaha.com
