A person familiar with the negotiations says outfielder Nate Schierholtz and the Chicago Cubs are closing in on a one-year, $2.25 million contract.
The person, speaking Wednesday on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been finalized, confirmed reports by several media outlets. Schierholtz can earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses.
Schierholtz was traded from San Francisco to Philadelphia last season in the deal that sent Hunter Pence to the Giants at the July 31 non-waiver deadline. He batted .257 with six homers in 114 games overall this year and is a .270 career hitter in six seasons.
The Phillies declined to tender Schierholtz a 2013 contract offer before last Friday's deadline, making him a free agent.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum revealed on Tuesday that he was shot by Hall of Fame player Robin Yount while the two were hunting quail during the offseason. This is easily my favorite story in a while.
Sveum, who was teammates with Yount on the Milwaukee Brewers from 1986-1991, says the two were hunting quail in Arizona when Yount hit a two-for-one special.

You got to know when to show ‘em, got to know when to fold ‘em.
Poker player Ruben Amaro Jr. invested players, pitcher Vance Worley and pitching prospect Trevor May, to get speedy, young centerfielder Ben Revere from the Twins.
Michael Bourn, who they are obviously not pursuing, would cost money and years.
Boun will be 30, Revere is 24.
Amaro got some money left and may have...
At first glance, the Philadelphia Phillies may have got the better end of this deal. Yesterday, the Minnesota Twins and the Phillies agreed to a deal to send Ben Revere to Philadelphia for Vance Worley and Trevor May. Worley is coming off an elbow injury and Trevor May is still proving himself in the minors.
Mandy Housenick of the Allentown Morning Call suggests Revere...

It's only fitting that a guy with the patriotic last name of Revere would wind up playing in Philadelphia. The Phillies gave up a lot to get Revere, so the expectations will be high for the new center fielder. Here's what to expect from the newest Phillie.
The Phillies haven't made any news this off-season, but they may be about to become very loud. After completing a deal for Ben Revere, reports have a deal for Michael Young done and awaiting his approval. With center field filled, what would the addition of Young mean for the Phillies?
