The final tally is in, and 13 athletes with Arizona connections brought home a total of 17 medals from the 2012 London Olympics. The biggest haul goes to swimmer Matt Grevers, who lives in Tucson and trains with Ford Aquatics. Grevers won an individual gold in the 100 backstroke with an Olympics record time of 52.16 seconds, added a second gold as part of the 4x100 medley relay team and got a silver from swimming in the preliminary round of the 4x100 freestyle relay. Will Claye of Mountain Pointe High School earned two individual medals -- a silver in the triple jump and a bronze in the long jump. Claye now lists San Diego as his home. The other individual medalist in track and field was high jumper Brigetta Barrett, who is about to begin her senior season at the University of Arizona. She won silver in the high jump with a jump of 6 feet, 8 inches -- best ever by a collegiate athlete. All told, Arizona's swimming contingent was responsible for eight medals. Former University of Arizona swimmer Nick Thoman, who now trains in Charlotte, N.C., won an individual silver in the 100 backstroke, finishing second to Grevers, and also received a gold medal for swimming in the preliminary round of 4x100 medley relay. Caitlin Leverenz of Tucson, who swims for the University of California, won bronze in the 200 individual medley. Two other swimmers were awarded medals for their participation in relays. Former UA athlete Alyssa Anderson received a gold for swimming in the preliminaries of the 4x200 freestyle relay; and breaststroker Breeja Larson of Mountain View High School, now swimming at Texas A&M, won gold for swimming in the preliminaries of the 4x100 medley relay. Six others won medals in team sports. Former Arizona State star James Harden and University of Arizona star Andre Iguodala won gold for Team USA in men's basketball; Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi earned her third career gold for Team USA in women's basketball; and former ASU star Amy LePeilbet was a starting defender for Team USA's gold-medal women's soccer team. Brady Ellison of Glendale won silver with Team USA in men's archery, and former ASU athlete Rowie Webster won bronze for Australia in women's water polo.
