  • On the same day the Lions free up $8.5 million in cap space, Yahoo Sports reports Asante Samuel is being shopped around for two second round draft picks. In 2008 Asante Samuel signed a 6 year deal worth $59.5 million. Although his base salary is $5.9 million for 2011, his cap value is $9.3 million. In 2012 the cap value is $9.5 million and in 2013 his contract is worth $11.5 million.

    Perhaps the Lions are working on new contract terms to adjust Asante to their salary structure. If Asante Samuel will allow the Lions to restructure his contract, I fully expect Samuel to be in a Lions uniform by week one of the regular season. The Lions defense is currently ranked in the top 15 in the league. If the Lions sign Asante Samuel, consider the Lions defense ranked in the top five. This would also send shockwaves throughout the NFC North, the Detroit Lions would seriously contend for the division.
