The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continued dealing a day after trading Scott Downs, and have sent third baseman Alberto Callaspo to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Grant Green. Callaspo will play second base for Oakland. This trade is more than a rental for Oakland, as Callaspo is signed through next year, when he'll make $4.875 million. The 30-year old only extensively played second base in 2009 with the Royals, when he logged 1240 innings at the position and had brutal defensive statistics. He's been an above average defender at third over the last four seasons, spent with the Royals and Angels. Callaspo has struggled with the stick this season, hitting just .252/.324/.347 in 337 plate appearances this year for the Angels. Last year, Callaspo hit .252/.331/.361 with ten homers and nearly as many strikeouts as walks, but either line would be an upgrade over the cumulative .254/.320/.340 line the A's have gotten from second base this year, which has mainly been played by Eric Sogard. The 25-year old Green was Oakland's first round pick in 2009, but has been a man without a position over his pro career. In 16 MLB plate appearances, all of which have come this season, Green is hitless. In 87 games with AAA Sacramento this season, Green is hitting .325/.379/.500 with 11 homers, so there's clearly something there with the bat  It'll be interesting to see if the Angels move either second baseman Howie Kendrick or shortstop Erick Aybar in the next 17 or so hours. Both players have received interest from various teams, and the Angels could look to continue to cut bait on players as their season spirals down the drain. I'm not sure how much of an upgrade Callaspo really will be for the A's, but they didn't exactly trade a key component of their future for the upgrade. After the emergence of Josh Donaldson at third base, Jed Lowrie's continued solid play at short, and Brandon Moss continuing to provide massive power at first, second base was the lone position in the Oakland infield needing an upgrade. With Chase Utley off the market, Callaspo is probably the best bat out there, and if his glove plays at even a league average level, the A's will have made out fine. [follow]
