For the 2012 season, MLB established two Wild Card teams in each league in order to make a one-game playoff and determine who will go to the Divisional Series. In the NL the Braves and Cardinals became the first teams ever to play the Wild Card elimination game. The game started off great for the Braves. Kris Medlen was outstanding mowing down Cardinals with his devastating change-up and then, David Ross put the Braves on the board with a two-run shot. But then, everything began to fall apart. Defensive miscues allowed the Cardinals to tie and later take the lead in the game. And in the eight, one of the worst calls I have ever seen by an umpire, sealed the fate of the Braves. With runners on first and second, Andrelton Simmons popped up to shallow left field, and even though the ball fell right between Matt Holliday and shortstop Pete Kozma left field umpire, Sam Holbrooks decided to call an infield fly- even though the ball was about 80 feet beyond the infield dirt. The runners advanced one base, but Simmons was called out and instead of having a bases loaded, one out situation for Brian McCann, he came up to the plate with two outs and runners on second and third. The outrage about the situation arose immediately via Twitter, and to be honest I joined the virtual mob for a while, but after meditating about the situation, I realized that while the call was indeed horrible, the Braves committed three defensive errors throughout the game that translated into four unearned runs. Besides that, there is no way you could have foreseen what McCann going to do with the bases loaded and only one out. Maybe he could've hit a home run, a double or a single, or maybe he could've hit into a double play. Nobody knows, so you can't base a game on something that didn't happen. The Braves didn't lose the game because of a miscalled play, they lost because they played bad defensively and couldn't capitalize on 12 hits. Another thing that I read on Twitter regarding the bad call and the game was that one-game playoffs are unfair. Is that true? Yes. But teams knew the format before the season started which made winning the division that much more important. Image by David Berkowitz under the Creative Commons License Agreement.
