from Damien Cox of Ths Spin at the Toronto Star,
It's really amazing how dumb the Calgary Flames have become.
A lack of strategic thinking has the Flames in a terrible spot with a disappointing record, still trying to deny all the strong evidence that they need to take a giant step back and rebuild, hanging on to veteran players beyond their due date in some faint hope...

Tonight the Calgary Flames head to Colorado to take on the Avalanche, a team who has come up short in the past three games but is still only sitting one point back of the Flames. If either team is serious about playoffs they will need a string of wins, and there is no doubt that the Avâs are hoping Calgary will be a springboard.
The last significant free agent to sign this season is Ryan O'Reilly. He was a restricted free agent this summer. He was unable to come to a deal with the Colorado Avalanche. After a 55 point third NHL season at age 21, he looked poised to become a star in the NHL. Potentially he could be worth a lot to his team but that potential is yet to be fully realized in the NHL...

The Ryan O'Reilly saga has been, in a word, odd. The Colorado Avalanche haven't exactly been forking over money for the forward's talents. The forward had 18 goals and 37 assists last season for the Avalanche, and had been expecting a bit of a payday. Even his father got into the mix, taking to Twitter to air his issues with the franchise (and misspelling it in the process...
After weeks and weeks of no motion on the Ryan O'Reilly front, the Calgary Flames have kicked that into gear.
