Baby Fish: Zephyrs win behind Petersen’s homer; Moran homers for Hoppers

Bryan Petersen hit a homer to pace New Orleans to a victory. Bryan Petersen paced New Orleans to a 7-4 win over Tucson on Thursday night going two-for-five including a triple and his eighth homer of the season. Some Good Catches from Florida: Eovaldi, Turner, Yelich

hueytaxi As somebody who follows the Tribe and the Rangers, I get tired of the seeing some of the same old teams. I was very excited for the Indians to make a trip to Miami last weekend and see some new players. And by new I mean young, very young... but talented. We all know about Jose Fernandez, the young fire baller for the Marlins who is killing it this year, but there are...

Game 114: Pirates vs. Marlins Recap

Source: FanGraphs Henderson Alvarez and Tom Koehler each set season highs in strikeouts despite the Marlins losing the first two games of this series. That put the fear of everything holy into me considering that the rookie phenom Jose Fernandez would be pitching this game. The fact that he struck out 13 Pirates a week…

Baby Marlins: Suns streak snapped; NO in the win colum

Kevin Mattison had two hits and an RBI for the Zephyrs in their 4-2 win over Reno The Jacksonville Suns win streak came to an end in a dubious matter as they were no-hit by Chicago Cubs prospect Eric Jokisch on Tuesday night in Jacksonville. The Suns, who welcomed call up Austin Barnes earlier on the day, had an 11-game win streak entering the game, but Jokish pitched the first no...

Gerrit Cole and Jose Fernandez: The Rematch

I don't think that this needs too much hype or additional buildup. On July 28, Gerrit Cole (1st overall pick in the 2011 draft, preseason #7 prospect at Baseball America) faced off against Jose Fernandez (14th overall pick in the 2011 draft, preseason #5 prospect at Baseball America) in Miami. Cole struck out eight batters in seven innings, holding the Marlins to four hits, but...

Game 114: Pirates 5 Marlins 4

When the Marlins scored two runs off of Gerrit Cole in the top of the first inning, my immediate thought was that the Pirates had to hope that Jose Fernandez wasn't going to pitch more than five or six innings this afternoon. I thought that was a reasonable hope; Fernandez is only 20, after all, and he threw 108 pitches in his 14-strikeout domination of the Indians over the weekend...

The mirror series

This Marlins series is strange. The Pirates and Marlins played each other not even two weeks ago, and this second incarnation of the first series is happening with the same exact pitching matchups that we saw over the weekend in Miami ten-odd days ago. Tonight, Tom Koehler and Charlie Morton match up after giving us the only poorly pitched game in Pirates-Marlins Round 1. The Pirates...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Miami Marlins – Game 114

Yesterday was a good day.  For the Pirates of course, but for me too.  Without getting into my personal life it was an emotional day and that led me to start thinking about other things in addition to why I was so happy. How cool is this season for the old hat Pirate fans?  I’m…

Game 114 Preview: Pirates vs. Marlins

Marlins (43-69) at Pirates (69-44) 12:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs go for their fifth win in a row and a sweep today in a getaway contest with the Marlins. Regardless of the outcome today, this has been an excellent and possibly a season-defining homestand. The Pirates won all three series and gained significant ground in the division race. And it’s...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Miami Marlins – Game 113

It doesn’t get a whole lot more exciting than last night’s ending.  Talk about production off the bench!  Last time the Bucs faced the Marlins I thought they lost the series in the Henderson Alvarez game.  This time Alvarez pitched well and he deserves a lot of credit but the Pirates  won, putting them in…

Game 113 Preview: Pirates vs. Marlins

Marlins (43-68) at Pirates (68-44) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates look to make it two in a row and a series win after last night’s dramatic victory. With one of the league’s best pitchers waiting to face them tomorrow, clinching a series victory tonight would be a good idea. Tonight’s starters… Tom Koehler (3-6, 4.34) vs. Charlie Morton...
